V8 front valance

Maybe a silly question......
(The front valance is off my car and radiator etc out)
Why is there a square 'hole' within the 'mesh' detail both sides on the front valance ?

I have no idea, but I was tempted to add the 'missing' bits to mine before it was painted.
I was thinking of doing that but wanted to check on here if holes are needed first - it just looks a bit odd !

I thought it was so you could get your fingers in to retrieve the rad drain plug when you unscrew it and it drops into the deepest recesses of the front valance.

My V8 came with a hole-free valance grille. It's the only one I've seen.

Don't know what year of car the panel came from, all the front end panels were from a different car.

Single hole valances were on standard TTFs probably until G-suffix introduction. The TTF also had one towing eye so it makes sense. When the 3500S Automatic for the North American was introduced Rover added an extra eye to these cars for lashing purposes, hence the second hole. Then they standardized that across the range until the end of production.

Conrad D. Conelrad, you might have something unique from very early production cars or even pre-production. Question, does this valance have multiple vertical slats in the small air intake on the top or only one?

The 2 missing slats at the end of the grille I think is an S2 thing!
My 1968 S1V8 grille is identical to the one shown!
My 1971 S2V8 grille has the 2 missing slats!

I'd need to look through the service notes to see when they changed, but would hazard a guess at mid to late 1969.

So mine's a series one V8 valance? I like that, they do look better without the missing slats.

At least, but I think early TTF should have a single towing eye cut-out.

Chris, quite certain it's until G-suffix.. so like you say, Autumn 1969. Don't have my service notes here though!
