V8 Burning Oil

Hi all. I posted this on end of an older thread for tappet noise but in hindsight thought it is better to start a new thread as it’s separate problem.

Having noticed blue smoke in rear mirror on occasion which has got more noticeable since mid part last year. The engine was rebuilt with newly overhauled Vitesse heads in sept 22- the vitesse heads done in oct 21. So yesterday I finally got round to doing a compression test. The highest was 165psi and lowest 155. I believe that variation is within tolerance? The spark plug condition upon examination was telling. 7 of the 8 were pretty much text book- brownish and dry - as you would expect to find them- except for cylinder position No.6. This plug was oily as per pic and sooted up. Clearly oil is entering the cylinder. When driving blue smoke is noticeable when coasting down hills and on accelerating from traffic light/standing after idling a while.
My thoughts are valve stem seal issue- compression is good at 155psi (11bars) and no oil is being pumped out any seals engine is very oil tight. Tad miffed as these heads were fully overhauled prior to fitment in Oct21- or so I was told…..
Any advice on likely chance of it being valve steam seal? Assume inlet one? (But would do both). I have read up on how to replace with head in situ via the rope into cylinder ‘trick’ to stop valve slipping down into cylinder when using a little spring compressor tool to release collets which I am happy to do. I was going to wait till post summer but tempted to do and just see if it solves it. Why would one seal go?
I still have tappet noise issue but that can wait till winter (is my thoughts on that). That’s on the other bank and is either No1, no 3 or no 5 cylinder. No.1 compression was 155psi and no 3 and 5165 psi. It’s not seriously noisy tappet and only appears noisy once warmed up- it’s ok when cold from start once oil gets round.

Thanks Harvey appreciate your feedback. I think I will take rocket cover off in next week or so and order some seals get that cylinder valve set done as priority.

Note that there are 2 types of seals - early ones are just rubber cups that slip over the valve stem - dont last long, frequently break up and fall off; later ones clip onto the top of the guide and therefore the guide needs to be modified to carry them.

Hi JP928. Thanks for that info- I was not aware of this. I have purchased the what must be ‘standard’ seals - they were not expensive I will take a pic of them. It is in fact cylinder 5 not 6 that had the oily spark plug - the passenger side bank. I wanted to get to do this job before now but no time. Annoyingly the tappet noise is on the other bank -on no 2 or no4 cylinder. Still hopeful that it’s a tappet rocker and have a friend who is going to give me a lend of complete rocker shaft to bolt in and test. Yesterday I got my chance to get HJ on a rolling road which I booked 6 or so weeks ago and hoped to have valve guide seals and tappet done before got my turn on RR but hey ho they not show stoppers.

The good news is the engine and carbs/dizzy all in fine fettle! The carbs were near spot on balance wise and mixture good - a little rich due to slightly bigger needle fitted by my carb tuning guy- not needed so will replace back with standard though not urgent. Timing was tweaked a few times tiny adjustments made which allowed a final peak power test at 154BHP - up from first test of 148. For a bog standard set up bar vitesse heads I am happy enough with that! See pics for data on power band etc. On way home it defo pulled better and temp gauge spot on middle of gauge. So a fruitful result and worth the 6 week wait to get on RR - it gives confidence that the bit of oil consumption diagnosis of valve seal is most likely. And just hope tappet noise is rocket related or at worst a lifter. Both fixable!

My NADA hasn't got valve stem seals and as far as I can tell, never did. There are none shown in the Rover parts catalogue. It doesn't burn oil though so it doesn't seem to need them!

I have a TVR 350i with a bog standard 3.5 SD1 Vitesse engine in and that has seals... of sorts, although they are only a rubber washer pushed over the end of the valve stem!! That is a 1988 car though so a later engine I guess.

This is interesting! Thanks for the valve stem seal info. Until read your posts all info I had suggested all engines had some form valve stem seal. I don’t really know if my head has seals or not! I have SD1 9.35:1 engine block (1986 EFI according to engine number) but had vitesse larger valve heads put on in late 2021. The heads were sold as fully overhauled ready to fit. In 2023 when engine was stripped and rebuilt heads were skimmed and pressure tested (skim to take account thicker composite head gaskets) all found ok as you would expect. I can’t say valve seals were observed or not as never looked for them. I guess taking rocker covers off and checking valves will confirm - re the presence of seals or not can be visibly seen? From the spark plug inspection I did it’s No5 cylinder that’s of concern re oily plug. Rest were ok nice correct brownish colour. Tappet noise is also worse on the no1 or 2 cylinder I am going to fit good secondhand rockers to simply eliminate that possibility- I suspect it’s a follower though and so hope it’s not a lobe worn on the new camshaft! If oil burning cannot be solved re not a seal issue then over this coming winter it looks like heads off again- that will be very frustrating after so much work done less than 3000 miles since full rebuild but don’t really have a choice. Something is clearly not right! Thanks again for input and help.

If replacing rockers you should also replace the shafts as well. They are usually as bad or worse than the rockers. Wear here can produce tappet noise.
