V8 Assembly Video

So when we talk about changing the shells on Sleipnir are we just replacing the bottom shells as he calls them and leaving the top ones as is, or do we change them all and push them in around the top of the crank? Assuming the sump just comes off without having to remove other bits?

Rich.

You change all of them Rich.

You will have to take off the oil baffle plate (or whatever it's called).

That's a cross bolted V8 they are building as well, the main caps are different on yours, although I don't know if the torque setting are different.

The procedure, torque settings and main cap design are all completely different, so that video should be used for interest only for all non cross bolted engines. The main bearing caps on all 3.5 litre engines are tiny by comparison.

I've seen the vid before, but they would have checked the bearing clearances before the final fitting, the vid can give a false sense of security if the humble d.i.y'er thinks they can buy a set of oversize shells and fit them (to a reground crank) without confirming bearing clearances by either measuring or using plastigauge. It would be fine for replacing standard shells because if the old shells are worn then the crank journals will be ever so slightly worn as well so refitting std shells with the original crank will still give you clearance, but if having the crank reground and o/size shells fitted then you would have to confirm bearing clearances prior to final crank fitting as per vid.

always replace a full set of shells top and bottom as you can only buy a full set anyway and fitting the full set will go someway to improving any lost oil pressure as a result of worn shells. same for big end shells as well. I've never done a crank reshell in situ, but make a note that the top shells are located with a notch in the block so make sure you remove them the correct way. edit; you can see the notch in the video
