tyres to fit 1949 rover P3/75.

Can some learned person give me a heads up on what size 16inch tyres are being used on the above cars in your area`s , the rims are 5inch wide. i would prefer radials but all information would be appreciated.thanking you in anticipation.Derrick.Smith.

According to P3 parts list they are 5.75 x 16 , 4 ply rating or 6 ply as an option. The 17" wheel had 5.50 x 17 tyres. I believe 5.75 x 16 are difficult to find so its either 5.50 or 6.00. I personally wouldn't fit radials as to maintain the correct rolling radius it would need to be a 185/80 x 16 , which are about 1.5 inches wider, but I have seen 175/80 x 16 Taxi tyres fitted which equates to 5.50 x 16 cross ply rolling radius. The wheels are designed for tubes.
Waymaster do a 5.75/6.00 x 16 cross ply 575/600x16 (575/600-16) WAYMASTER PREMIUM: TUBED TYPE - Tyres Store

Thank you roverp480 for your reply,i have 195/75r16 T/L on at the moment they are 8ply light truck tyres and the are too rough and harsh. as long as the tyres are close to the old size it really does not matter as i have replaced the original diff with an early model range rover diff. thanks again for your information best regards Derrick.Smith.

I know a number of people up the gearing by fitting higher ratio diffs, so fitting tyres with a slightly lower rolling ratio will not be a issue . Yes the 8 ply rating will give a harder ride , better to fit 4 ply which a normal radial car tyre will be equivalent. Trust you have tubes fitted as both Rover and Michelin strongly advise doing. The higher cornering loads possible with radials , especially with a violent emergency manoeuvre can unseat the bead with a wheel not designed for a radial tubeless application, and cause immediate deflation.

This takes me back a bit. We had a P2 16 when I was a child, and I recall father lamenting the fact that if you reduced the pressures to make the ride acceptable the sidewalls cracked. If you go up in diameter to get more tyre cushion, the diff centre could readily be swapped for a lower (number) ratio from a P3 or P4. I think the available ratios that would fit went from 4.7, 4.3, 4.1 and 3.9.

Yes i have fitted the 3.9 diff center and has made a big difference the motor does not get as hot up here and does not use as much fuel either, the motor revs have been cut back as well. do you know of where i can purchase 185x16 radial passenger tyres in your area thanking you. Derrick.Smith

You really need 185/80 x 16 , 60% aspect ratio would be too small in my view. They are available but incredibly expensive

Depends on the rim widths a bit. Landys of the period ran 600-16 tyres as below. 78 Series III....ex Saudi National guard.

Those wheels look like 6.5" wide used on the 2B Forward Control or 1 Ton. The standard 6.00x16 tyres were on 5" wide wheels, although you could fit 6.50 x 16 and 7.00 x 16 on the 5" wide wheel. They were 'F' profile rims

That car is an Air Portable, or Lightweight, so it weighs less than 1 ton. Pretty sure they were 600-16s, Pirelli Scorpions.

These are the correct wheels on a 1/2 ton & in fact they are 6.50 x 16 tyres as standard. You can see the much reduced width on the spare
Half ton LR.jpg
A lot of people especially for sand use & such, fit the wider one ton wheels & bigger tyres
