Transmission Fluid

Good Morning All:
Does anyone have any experience using " B&M Trick Shift" Transmission fluid in the borg warner 35 automatic? I was in dire need of transmission fluid the other day and had only this product available. The label says that it can be used where ATF transmission fluid is called for. I have to say that the transmission is shifting much more smoothly since adding this product. Any danger from using this product, anyone?
Thanks, Drew

If it's changing more smoothly since adding it then check to see whether it contains friction modifiers. If it does then that's why the shifts have smoothed out, and that smoothness is caused by slip, which causes a build up of heat in the same way that Dexron does, and the use of such fluids is inadvisable.

Harvey:
I found the following on a Ford Muscle Car forum: .
"What’s the difference between a good stock transmission fluid and B&M’s Trick Shift? A. Trick Shift is a specially blended automatic transmission fluid containing additional friction modifiers to reduce clutch and band slippage and enhance shift performance. It contains extreme pressure agents to prolong planetary gear and bearing life and viscosity index improves handle higher temperatures ."
As always, thanks for your advice. I would have thought the smoother performance a good thing. I'll drain it and replace. What is your recommendation for tranny fluid?
Thanks,
Drew

I've just looked and it says it's a Type F performance fluid, so shouldn't contain friction modifiers, although it does say it contains additives, it doesn't specify what they are. It also says it should firm up the shifts, which also points to it not containing friction modifiers.

It depends on how much you added. If it's just a top up then from what iIve read you're probably OK. Saying that it's designed to reduce clutch and band slippage would tend to confirm that.

I added a bit over a quart. Unfortunately, I can't find appropriate fluid for this transmission locally. I'll have to order on EBay.
Thanks, again,
Harvey.

Because you can't drain the converter if you want to be sure that you have removed most of the fluid that is currently in there you will have to do at least four drain/refills with use in between, which will be getting a bit pricey. A quart is about 14% of the total capacity.

Personally, I think that if you can confirm for certain that there aren't any additives contained in it that are there to increase slip then I'd leave well alone.

It is a tricky one. Those modifiers may be there to reduce slip, not increase it. If you feel happier changing as much of the fluid as you can then do so, if nothing else it should put your mind at rest.

Hello, I hope you don't mind me jumping in. The transmission fluid level on my 2000 auto is reading a bit low, still showing on the dipstick when cold but barely. I would like to top off but have no idea what grade fluid is present. Are there any safe bets for adding this small amount of fluid? I was planning on using Type F but it is not commonly available at the autoparts store. Is there a more commonly used grade for the 35 Borg Warner transmission? Thanks for the assistance.

Thank you for the advice, will do. Just hope Dexron wasn't used. Seems I always forget to ask what fluids have been used as they are often incompatible and can do real harm. Same thing goes with the brake fluid: 3, 4, 5, 5.5, gimme a break! Cheers for helping me.
