Throttle return spring

Evening All,

I have a SD1 V8 in my '72 RRC and whilst removing and cleaning one of the carburetors I took off the throttle return spring, which I'm struggling to put back.

Looking at several pictures on Google I have an incling that the spring previously was affixed in a 'bodge-it-and-see' way as the bracket it was installed with (pic attached) doesn't look to be standard nor does the springs original position (which I can vaguely recall before I removed the carb). I now have the typical over-revving on idle as the pedal's weight is now having an effect (punishment for not remembering where I took the spring off from maybe?).

Anyone able to help?

Thanks.

I take it you weren't the person who installed the SD1 engine into your Range Rover.

I would suggest you connect the spring to the linkage and making sure it's pulling against the cable and find somewhere to hook it onto. Might be an idea to do up that lock nut when you're at it :)

Many thanks for the late night response!

To be rather thick here - where should I connect the spring exactly? I've tried to find somewhere to attached either end of the spring to no avail.

You've seen I've left a lock nut undone?

I can't see the set up that well to be honest, so can't give you an exact answer. Try moving the linkage as if you're revving the engine, and see what moves that you can connect a spring to. See if you can get a good photo of the linkage at idle and at WOT, and also a photo of the spring.

Lock nut: - There's one on the other end as well.

Hi,

Please see attached photos of the spring as well as the linkage being depressed (d) by the acc pedal and not depressed (nd) by the acc pedal.

Does that help?

My best guess(es) and they are only guesses, would be that it hooked into the hole in the home made plate (circled in red), and maybe back in to the carb base, or around the threaded piece on the linkage and back onto the rocker cover screw. The plate seems to have gone in your current pics?

All you need to do is find two points which are further apart when the throttle is depressed and the right distance so that there is a slight tension on the spring at the closed position.
