Guten Tag alle zusammen!

I am about to getting used to Jimmy being an ongoing project. Work does never end, but neither does the fun - what a GREAT car, what a cool drive!

I had the steering/front wheels aligned this week, and it did improve driveability hugely!
I never noticed that one could never let go of the steering wheel as Jimmy took to the right. Now he goes straight ahead just lovely!
(The steering wheel was upside down as well! No comment!!! ;))

Oh yes:
My brother and I are coming to the UK for the Biggin Hill Festival of Flight - amongst other things - on August 18th, and we are staying until Monday 21th :p
(We cannot make it to the 50th aniversary of the most loved V8 Engine, sadly... )

What I would like to take care of before coming over is the worn-out shift stick of our BW65 box.

I was told by an enthousiast in the Netherlands that he can order the joint/ball on its end as a new/NOS part for 65 Euros. What I would like to know is: can I install that from inside the car or has the box to be lowered from beneath Jimmy?
I know I saw something to that effect here on th forum, but I can not seem to find it... .

DANKE!!

There isn't a ball on the bottom of the gearlever on an auto. The normal problem is the spherical seat that the gearlever sits in. You need to remove the centre console from inside the car, but you need to get underneath to disconnect the cable, and to undo the 3 nuts that hold the plate that secures the spherical seat in place. It is possible it's just the mounting plate loose on the floor if you wanted to check that before buying, but that would be a rarity.

There are two types of spherical seat, you need the later type, 599624 in the image below:

Thank you Harvey!!!
(I was about to send you a pn, but I reckoned that somebody else might know this ... ).

As far as I remember from the previous times I had the console off, there was nothing loose, so I'll go for the spherical seat.
Another step towars the perfect P6! :)

Replacement of said part 599624

Gear Selector Lever_jpg.jpg

(the spherical rubber seat, second part from top) has, to our amazement, transformed the feel of Jimmy a huge deal!

I took him to work this morning and was speeding all the way, as he is SO quiet and smooth! Especially when picking up speed after a bend or turn, this is a stunning effect.
Further emissions (smell, heat) are similarly reduced, and the car feels MUCH more like the luxury item it once used to be. Selecting gear is a HUGE pleasure now!

The seat was reduced to a third of its volume, basically the middle ring with no spheres to speak of to hold the lever, so this was likely to flap about the place like a limp ... limp bit. Almost all parts related to the lever dropped out onto the ground after opening the seat for the seat from underneath. We were lucky to find them all even in the professional surroundings we were workin in, and had to figure out how they were arranged as they are slightly different to those on the diagram.

We have missed out a great deal on one of Jimmys biggest advantages in the past, and if i had known that I would have done this pretty straightforward operation on the second day we owned him ;)

DANKE SEHR euch allen!

Post Scriptum:

After making our way back from the UK - it was SMASHING!!! - through Belgium (some 300 kilometres), the bonnet was cold :)confused:) and the shift stick and hand break lever were PIPING HOT!
(It's a good thing that they do have knobs and grips on them)

This must be at least one of the sources of surplus, inbearable heat that goes into the interior, especially when driving in (Antwerp! That blasted SatNav) traffic congestion... .

(Otherwise our Jimmy was, as always, REALLY COOL!)

Was just doing a last check under the car in readiness to drop the engine and GB back in next weekend. Came across a damaged spherical seat (see attached). Will take a few weeks for one to arrive (in Oz) from the UK.

Of coarse it would be easier to access the bottom of the gear stick mount without the box in but it seems from this discussion you can still get to the three nuts with it back in the car?

Think I'll proceed next weekend as planned but leave the prop shaft out until the bush arrives. Plenty to do in the mean time.

Thanks, was thinking I've had 8 months to do a job and found it at the last minute. Not to say I'm back on the road just yet
