Testing and Fitting a Rev Counter S2 2200 Auto

At last night's Worcestershire Meet I was given a pod with the clock and rev counter as i fancy adding a rev counter so I can see what the engine's up to. I need to test it to make sure it works before settling on a price but I'm not sure how it should be wired up. On the back there is a black (I assume earth) with a bullet connector and a green wire without connector both of which attach to connectors on the back of the rev counter with nuts. There's also a braided white with black stripes wire which runs through a "loop" and connector but doesn't appear to be attached permanently. The counter is red lined between 6/7000rpm. Smiths RV1 1000/19 number on it. Not sure if that's a 4cl or 8cyl version but I wouldn't have thought it would matter other than the rev limit may be different?

So now the questions! Is there a wiring diagram for these things? Also would it be easy enough to wire it up temporarily to test it and what should I do? Finally if it works will I have to run extra wires or are they already in the loom (for a 2200SC Auto Series 2)?

RVI is trickier because it's inline with the ignition system (you really, really want RVC). This introduces several variables as what it effectively does is measure the current following into the ignition system, whereas RVC counts the pulses as the coil charges an discharges. This is why electronic ignition systems stop them working (or they overread). It should be marked somewhere what number of cylinders it is. The red line for the 8 is 5200, so it's 4 cyl which is unsurprising given the numbers of S1 V8s with tachometers compared to all the 4 pots.

The attached photo shows the correct optional extra rev counter for the 2000 as fitted to my p6 2000 auto. The calibration is different between the rev counter for the 3500 and the 2000 so a 3500 rev counter is no good for a 2000 and via versa. The wiring is already in the loom. You will see from the attached photo that the rev counter is the RVI type as annotated at the bottom of the face. The rev counter for the 2000 can be identified by having the red markings as per the one in the attached photo. The only problem is if someone has paid to recalibrate a rev counter for a 2000 to use in a 3500. I have come across this but it is highly unlikely. My RVI Rev counter worked perfectly when I temporarily fitted electronic ignition. Hope this is helpful. Good luck Tony

Green wire will need a fused feed from your ignition switch, black is earth and the white/ black wire looped through the block needs to be inserted in the feed from the end of the ballast wire to the distributer. It then counts the pulses as the contact breaker opens & closes. A 4 cylinder one will read 2x if used with an 8 cylinder engine Its shown in the workshop manual under early optional equipment.

Thanks folks, looks like I've got the 4cyl one, I doubt it'll make any difference whether it's the 2000 or 2200. I'll have to have a hunt around to see if I can find the relevant wires in the loom! Roll on the fine weather!
