Does anyone know if the air filter case in the photos is standard series 2 or home made?

That looks home made to me. Based on original maybe, but with "modifications"....

But then again, a peek in the book shows something very similar as standard for emission control.

I'd say it still looks home made though...

Looks like a lash-up to me. Federal TC's with air conditioning had a box similar to that, but the duct poked up into the gap between the carbs, not over the wing where it can suck in all the fibreglass off the bonnet liner!

I'd like to see pictures of it off the engine. I've seen drawing of thing similar for this side of the pond, and the details look almost too good to be truly homemade. There appears to be a stove pipe feeding in underneath so if a factory piece I'd expect a thermostat flap in the fresh air snout.

Like Harvey, i have just found out in the supplement to the workshop manual that this was used in the emission control cars.
By coincidence (?), this filter case was also used on A/C equipped cars as the snorkel clears the compressor.
I don't know when they started using it first. I was hoping that it was a little more common so there would have been a decent chance to find one to use in my TC.
Unfortunately, i guess that besides factory A/C TCs, emission control TCs are also very rare.

Actually you can see the "stove pipe" on the original photo. It seems to be coupled to a pipe running down towards the exhaust manifold - as you'd expect.
