The only place that I will use an adjustable is on the battery terminal bolts which seem to have heads that nothing fits?

Richard

I'm guessing they're probably rogue BSW/BSF.

They should be 1/4"Whit.

Indeed, when I worked at the bus company in distant times we were issued single ended insulated 1/4" whit spanners
for working on the batteries.

They should be 1/4"Whit. As we know, wheelnuts are 3/8"Whit, and there's a couple of 3/4"Whit & 7/16"Whit lurking around too. All of the above being spanner sizes, but not the matching thread type.

Then it's Occie's that are rogue...they're definitely UNF.

And you've got SD1 7/8"AF wheelnuts as well, have you no consideration for out great Whitworth heritage?....

7/8" AF? I find a 22mm socket fits very snugly...and firmly on the (1/2") breaker bar I carry..... :D (That might be a joke by the way H  )

Whitworth? Absolutely. The Moggy I'm (slowly) doing is as mad as box of frogs...seemingly random UNF and BSW all over the shop. I reckon Issigonis must have had a root round the Cowley parts bins to see what was available when he designed it - well, it was wartime I suppose. Either that or he'd just bought some Britool shares.

Joking or not, the bl**dy studs are Metric aren't they.......

It was, but, we discussed plug threads being that thread type (did you see what I did there?) and since then I've remembered that there are LOADS of that particular type of thread on P6's if you know where to look, so much so that it might even be worth buying a tap & die set........... (There, back on topic, just......)

Warren
What the hell have you started ? !! Now look whats 'appened . Ive gone and got losted .

I'm utterly confused too, Gerald. I thought there were a bunch of different threads and heads were simply metric or imperial. But all this talk of Whitworth spanners etc has made my brain hurt. Perhaps somebody could explain the basics in plain English?

Sorry for the hijack, Warren!

Some good info on threads >here<

...and on spanner sizes >here<

AF and Metric spanners are designated by the width of the jaw gap, e.g. 5/16", 10mm, etc.

Whitworth, or BSW, spanners on the other hand are designated by the diameter of the screw thread they fit. E.G a 1/4" Whit spanner, which has a jaw gap of .525", is for use on a 1/4" diameter Whitworth screw.

Also, a BSW spanner of a certain size will fit the next size up BSF fastener. E.G. a 1/4" BSW spanner also is for use on 5/16" BSF.

Hope that helps! :)

Not at all! If you hang around this forum long enough you receive quite an education! I already know far more about threads, heads and spanners than I did a couple of days ago - all knowledge that it can't hurt to possess if one insists on grovelling about old cars.

Off to read those links. Cheers.

Since we were discussing taps and dies...
I've just had a load of P6 bits blasted and galvanised and need to retap a few threads including the 7/16 (spanner size) ones on the DeDion elbows.
galv_4.jpg

My thread gauge reckons they're '28' which I assume means threads per inch. I don't have any taps of that size - closest set I've got is M6 (sorry Harvey  ). I'll need to replace the studs (and nuts), so need to be sure that they (or a length of studding)are available.
The same thread appears on a couple of other bits I need to sort out (like the air intake bracket just visible in the top of the photo) so I'd be much happier buying the correct taps than switching to M6.
So can anyone give me a pointer to the correct taps? Are they 1/4"?
These perhaps? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/370357572543 (1/4 X 28TPI UNF TAPS / standard unf pitch)

That's very useful thanks!
For some reason I've never looked at Namrick's website before. Looks like I'm going to be putting in a big order.
