Suddenly no rhd indicators??

Hi All,
I don't post on here very often but i have a problem with my 1971 P6 3500 ie suddenly no rhd indicators the lhd work fine i have owned P6s for nearly 40 years and usually fix any problems but this has stumped me as when i have had this problem in the past its been down to a faulty flasher unit but this has not cured the problem so any advice of suggestions are very much appreciated :thumb:

Almost certainly the contacts in the indicator switch have become dirty/corroded. There are separate flashers for indicator Vs hazards, but if the indicators work on one side and the hazards work all round, it's highly likely to be the switch. The same happened to me years ago.

If memory serves, you can remove the front cover of the steering column casing without removing the wheel. Take the 4 screws out, pull it back and rotate 90 degrees. Then operate the indicator switch. You can just see the copper contacts become exposed when the switch moves. Using a small blunt screwdriver and some thin cloth, attempt to clean up the contacts. It worked for me. Although to do properly you would of course have to remove the switch entirely.

Thanks i will give that a try :thumb:

It could be a poor wire connection, but as mentioned check the switch itself first . The wires to the RH indicators from the switch are Green with White trace , so if you have a meter one can see if you have power

Hi, Try working the hazard switch in and out a number of times because all the indicator connections go through it. It only takes the lightest of knocks or touches to move a contact and break a circuit.

Check the indicator lamps (front or rear) - if they are lit its not the switch. More likely the dash bulb....?Can the flasher be heard ?

Perhaps i need to explain a bit better when the indicator stalk is turned to the the right the indicators illuminate but do not blink where as the lhd ones work fine.

Always best to have ALL the facts. I assume yours is an S2 model, if not ignore all that follows. The same happened to mine recently...in the end I found the printed circuit trace to the RH turn dash bulb was damaged. First I would check that the dash bulb (2W wedge type) is OK, and if it is, Undo the speedo head from the dash and ease it just clear so you can see the circuit trace. The speedo can be disconnected and removed without undoing the whole dash (IMHO, a real PITA).

With the speedo out, trace the line from the right side connector to the bulb and check the continuity from the multi pin connector end to the bulb with a multimeter. the blue line is where a previous repair has been done, and the fault in the indicator line is visible at the bottom.
I recommend a magnetic tipped screw driver to help refit the speedo, and maybe a spare hand - with the trip reset and cable connected it didnt want to stay on the board. Dont forget to replace the white insulator behind it!!!!

Thanks for that but i really hope this isn't the fault if it is isn't there some conductive paint etc that would do the job??

If both RH lights illuminate but not flash it means there is enough current flowing to heat the bimetallic flasher unit enough to flash , try taking out one or both of the bulbs & replace and check for a bad earth . Does the warning light illuminate but not flash also? Any poor connection which acts as a resister could also be the reason.

Thanks for all the advice i finally got my indicators after checking all the above suggestions which turned out to be the flasher relay which i replaced with many used ones to no avail but having just bought a brand new aftermarket one off eblay 352498757093 all is finally working :)
