Strange relay issue

Hello People,

I here on behalf of my ol man about his p6 tc (converted to single carb).

he's had a starting issue, turn the key and just get the click of the relay, at first my dad thought it was the starter so he got another 1 (second hand), which didn't work, he then got the first 1 over hauled and fitted it, again no start, this is where i noticed its the relay clicking and not the starter.

I swapped the starter relay for the 1 behind the passenger glove box (same 6ra) and that didn't work. i tested both relays when behind the glove box and both are working as they should be. but neither are working with the starter motor, i'm not getting an outlet feed on any part of the relays when the key is turned as if starting the car

I've bridged the white/red with the white/brown and the starter kicks into life with the turn of the key

I've even run an earth straight to the relay in case it was a bad earth, still no go go.

So i'm now totally confused, can some 1 please shed some light on this or am i just being daft

Just to add the car was running a few months ago and quite a bit of work has been done all over the car, so something may have not been connected (i know this doesn't make it any easier but i'm hoping some 1 has had the same issue)

Thank you in advance

Shane

Hi, It sounds like the contact points inside the relay may be dirty. Bend back the tabs of the metal case and withdraw the bakelite board with the 'works' on, you should then be able to clean the points with a bit of emery. Then check it operates OK before re-assembling. The one behind the glove box is for the 11AC alternator, is this still fitted? If it is then connect it back up otherwise it won't charge. If there's an ACR type alternator then you have a spare relay, but tape up the wires to avoid the possibility of them shorting out.

I'll give that a go today.

I put the relay back behind the glovebox

I know this might sound stupid but why would a constant feed to the relay work but a feed from the ignition not work?

When testing 12volt main feeds I use a 21watt indicator bulb as a normal test lamp although light's up uses very little current to do so.
If the 21 watt bulb glows dimly that will indicate a feed/ switch issue.
Been caught out by normal test lamps and using multimeter on volt settings before.
Clive.

When I first bought Sparky, the halogen conversion caused me a few problems. One of them simply would not work, even though a multi-meter showed 12V at the contacts, and the earth showed zero on the ohmmeter, the bulb would not light. Connect it across the battery and it worked just fine.

It turned out the 40 year old wiring wasn't up to carrying the current required to run the halogen.

So, as Clive says, clean up the contacts, and it should work. Get some emery on the spades on the relay as well, and make sure the terminals are a tight fit.

Cheers Guys

Well the cleaning of the relay seem to of worked.

Now just to find out why we dont have a spark at the dizzy
