Steering box overhaul

Hi

Can anyone recommend a firm to check and if necessary refurbish the PAS steering box on my 3500S which is an Adwest I think. The one on the car is leaking ( as is the damper ) and the steering is very loose. I managed to acquire another one but only have the sellers word for it's condition.

Personally, and this is probably just me, I'd remove your box, and fit the replacement one you've bought, and then if that has problems get the original one overhauled, as you know the problems with that one. You may find your bought one is OK though, in which case you haven't wasted the money on an overhaul. They don't tend to give a lot of problems. They're not bad to overhaul yourself either, if you can get the droparm off.......

Hi Harvey, I would do the rebuild myself but yes I believe the drop arms are difficult to get off. Is the steering box easy to get in and out with the engine in place on the V8? I vaguely remember someone telling me it's a pig of a job. Presumably you break the two ball joints on the drop arm, disconnect the pipes and steering column then unbolt the box and remove. How long does it take? I grew tired of fitting supposedly good parts on my TC only to have to remove them overhaul then refit.

I'd look at a morning to remove one and refit the other, back in the day I'd have got it done a bit quicker, but time isn't really the main consideration. You have the sequence pretty much there, but the box is heavy, and although I used to refit on my own, getting the box back on to the column can be fiddly to say the least on your own, with another pair of hands it's a lot easier. ISTR you might have to move the brake reservoir out of the way, and you'll probably find it easier to remove the skuttle/decker panel as well.

I know what you mean about used parts, but I've had problems with overhauled parts as well.
