Steering Adjustment and Effect on Castor Action

Hello Fellow Roverites,
off and on I've been chasing a directional stability problem with my Rover 5000, that is to say it wants to wander at freeway speeds. One of the things I did during the extensive mods I made to the car was to fit a 3500S power steering box. I also noticed, at that time, what I thought was a bit too much free play so tightened up a bit on the adjustment screw. Yesterday I happened to be reading through the steering trouble shooting pages from the 3500S manual and noticed a warning about over tightening the adjustment screw because it can 'interfer with the caster action' or something to that effect.

So this mornng I loosened the adjustment screw about 1/2 turn, checked for free play which did, as expected increase a little bit, then took the car out on the road. It now does seem to be more stable at speed, not as good as I would like it, but better. Further mods include installing the new set of stiffer springs and a new, stiffer anti-roll bar that I had made in a local shop.

But my question to the Forum is: Has anyone else noticed the effect of steering box adjustment on directional stability?

Cheers,
Tom
