Steel or Fibreglass

Hi

I' m looking to replace the wings on my 2000SC, however i'm undecided on which material to go for:

firstly, its not really possible to keep it in 'original' condition, as its had work done by a previous owner.

I like the idea of fibreglass wings - low maintenance, affordable, etc.

what I would like know has anybody out there fitted or had experience of fibreglass wings?

Do they look right? fit right? and what is the general opinion? do they come in primer ready for spraying etc?

Maurice

They do fit but they can be a lot of work. Check they have the 'inner bits' (look inside a steel wing and you will see what I mean). Some 'glass wings are better than others.

You will also need to provide separate earthing for the lights (easy) and probably need to cut the light apertures for the sidelights (VERY steady hand!!)

If you do go for fiberglass then underseal them....not to prevent rust but to stop the light shining through which can make the paint appear lighter than the rest of the car.

Personally I would go for a good set of secondhand steel wings but for an everyday car I can see the point of 'glass.

Ring 'Uncle' Ian on 01302 750747 for prices on good steel wings...you could be pleasantly surprised.

:D I've got a full set of fibreglass panels to fit to my TC, front & rear wings, front and rear valance and sills.. They all look pretty good (2nd hand from Ian Wilson) and the sills are far better than the steal ones I bought last year !
I'm now looking for fibreglass doors....anybody ???

I just can't stand rust, simple as that, and fixing rust on body panels is a real pain, at least on the base unit you can do a good job without spending hours "finishing"

All my wings are fibreglass - works for me - i cant weld or do bodywork! Now about those doors.... Are they real?

It's probably the difference between the real thing and silicone implants - They look o.k. but there's heck of a difference when you feel 'em!
You can't beat the real thing.
I'll probably regret this comment but I stand by it.

So then John.....

......How EXACTLY do you know the difference between silicone implants and the 'real thing'

.....more importantly does Diana know that you know the difference? :0 ;)

Pete (I got a big stirring stick and know how to use it!))

Dear Pete,
I'm her second husband but she is my first wife - I was single for a long time before we got married!
I would not boast about a big stirring stick if I was you - Wait 'til you meet Diana socially!
It pays to be modest (as I am!)
Regards, John.
