Due to the sensitive nature of some of the material involved, I will not be able to go into detail, but I will attempt to explain the reasons why the P6 Rover Owners Club forum was closed on Sunday 1st of July, and subsequently remained closed until Monday 17th of September.

As many regular forum visitors will know, we had a number of fairly serious incidents on the forum over the past 18 months, where various users made unacceptable posts, which culminated in us receiving serious threats of legal action on more than one occasion.

These events took place during a very difficult period for the club, the committee was missing several key members and found itself in financial problems. Despite these problems the committee and club members knuckled down and managed to pull the club back into a much stronger position.

On the 1st of July the club held it’s 25th anniversary national rally, obviously this should have been a major celebration for the club, and indeed despite events early in the day, the rally was well organised and we believe all participants had a good day. Unfortunately there was an issue very early in the day involving members of the committee and members of the rally organising team. In order to allow the event to continue, several members of the committee took the decision to leave the rally.

Following very careful consideration and based on previous forum events, the committee took the decision to close the forum, to prevent another potentially major incident. This decision was then discussed along with the events of the 1st in depth at the committee meeting on the 15th of July. The committee came to the conclusion that there was no immediate solution to the forum being used as a medium for certain individuals to publish material that may bring the club into disrepute, so once again the decision was taken that the forum would remain closed until the AGM on the 16th of September, with the intervening period being used to find a way to re-open the forum. The only real way that the forum could re-open was if it could be monitored at all times, with myself being the only administrator this was not logistically possible.

During the closed period, numerous members contacted me to express their concern over the closure of the forum, and to offer assistance if needed, it was these offers of assistance which gave us the solution, which was to re-open the forum on the basis that all posts would be read and approved by a member of the “moderation” team.

This situation is still not ideal, as obviously it introduces a delay in the posting process which does upset the natural flow of the forum, but for the time being it is the only basis on which we can operate, hopefully in the future we can return to a more open forum.

The committee would like to apologise for the closure of the forum, we understand that it is a very valuable resource for many people and we hope that it can continue to be of great value.
