starter solenoid

hi, can someone tell me the part number for solenoid on starter motor on 72 v8. ....must get a parts manual.

There are two different types of starter motor, and they may have different solenoids.

In fact there are two types of solenoid on the early type, and another type on the later motor.

thanks harvey, i will get mine off when the weather permits me to. should there be a number on the starter.

is there anything you can do to the solenoid. every now and again car has no response. turn key can hear relay click but nothing but then all of a sudden it will turn over. red lights dont dim when this happens.

All you could try is giving the solenoid a tap when it happens. If it cranks afterwards then the solenoid is probably sticking. Don't forget that there is a relay in the system as well, and they can give problems.

Gripper, seconding what Harvey advised, give the solenoid a tap with a rubber hammer or something equally appropriate that won't damage the solenoid. My Rover's starter had the same issue, turn key, starter relay latching but no action from the starter. Whack the solenoid, sometimes more, sometimes less, try again and there she goes and we are on our way. This happened on and off, only very occasionally over the years until....last time it did it though, luckily in the garage for she wasn't going anywhere. I guess I tried for more than one hour all to no avail. I removed the starter and took it to an old school auto electrician. He did some fault finding, solenoid was not the problem, but there was problem within the armature, a number of shorts in fact where the protective coating had worn through. Parts that were not meant to be in contact were in contact. He retaped the problem areas, used a heat resistant araldite as an insulator and I paid the money. Once home, refitted, turned the key with anxious anticipation, and away she went! Problem fixed.

The moral of the story being, although it may be the solenoid sticking, at the end of the day it may not be, and if it isn't, the problem is possibly not in the solenoid at all, but somewhere else.

when it dont start i can hear the relay clicking in the passenger glove box so does that mean the relay is ok. just trying to narrow it down a bit.

I think the starter relay is on the drivers side inner wing, and just because you can hear it clicking that doesn't mean that the contacts inside are working, it could be just the operating coil that you are hearing. Check the output with a testlamp.

hi harvey, you say the starter relay is on the driver side under bonnet, yes there is one there so what is the one in the passenger side glove box. my car was an auto changed to man somewhere along the line so it would have had an inhibitor switch. would that relay have something to do with that. thanks bob.

If you have an 11AC alternator then the relay in the glovebox could be the one to disconnect the alternator when the ignition is switched off if you car is or was so equipped.

after all the problems and checking things over as to why my car would not start quite regular it turned out to be something simple. wire to starter relay from ignition switch was corroded and not connecting properly. cheap fix for a change. thanks for all your help people.
