starter solenoid leads

Hi all

there are 2 leads that go to the starter solenoid. one from the starter relay and according to the wiring diagram the other comes from the coil. looking at mine the lead from the coil is not attached yet the solenoid still functions..... what does the lead from the coil do?

what does the lead from the coil do?

It doesn't come from the coil, it goes to the coil. When the solenoid is energised then a 12v supply goes to the coil, bypassing the ballasted supply giving 12v on starting.
