Starter motor Lucas 2m100

I have checked the brushes on my car's starter motor and is now about to reassemble the starter motor. The washer as shown in the picture is broken. Can I replace it with a standard steel washer or does it have to be the same material as the original (copper)?

I think you'll find that is a top hat bush with the rim broken off.

Yes, you need to replace that properly.

There also should be a cap over the whole lot, that seems to be missing too.

Ah ok, it's not just a washer but a bushing. I'll order one then. I have the rubber cap.
