Hi every body.
Well Rover towed our little boat on our holiday, and we had a good time. There was one little incident however. I flicked the starter switch when the engine was turning backwards (another incident) this really didn't do the helix any good at all and caused it to jam inside the pinion, sh.t while one is on holiday. I did redeam myself however, by removing the starter motor and stoning the burr from the helix, then putting it all back together, reinstalling the starter (awkward especially when on holiday with limited resources) and lo we were mobile again.

well done john , i was looking at my p4 guild book yesterday for 1998 which listed the names and addresses of members , their car regs and whether they would offer help if needed , this results in a network of people all over the uk and ireland who can offer help if you are stranded, i myself was onj the way to birmingham with mam and neice and in ledbury at the front of a queue of traffic at lights in a one way street the fuel pump decides to give up the ghost in my volvo amazon , the local parts shop were extremely helpful and supplied an electric pump from a mini , wire and clips etc and even cut a piece of aluminium out and drilled it to blank off the old pump , it was still like that when i sold the car, you have teased us now , why was the engine going backwards!pray tell all, regards rich

Well seeing as you asked, It is all a bit embarrasing really. Rovers battery was a bit low read nearly flat. So I had backed him up a little slope ready to use the forward motion gained by the slope to spin the engine, hence saving the battery. Forgeting that it was in reverse (gear lever position could easly be confused). Anyway when I let the clutch out the engine was spinning backwards and declined to fire up, not realising that we were in reverse I flicked the starter which was all to much for the starter bendix. V Embarrasted.
