Stalling when in traffic

Hi all,
I'm new to the forum (see my post in the Welcome section if interested).

I have a small problem with my engine stalling when I've been in traffic for a while.

The engine is not overheating - the needle sits comfortably at normal, there is no fluid being dumped (which give me some comfort on the viability of the temp. guage), it revs when you press the accelerator in neutral - however when you put it in D, and accelerate, it stalls and cuts out. Only way to get it going again is to keep the revs up and put it in D. Once I get it going again, it generally doesn't happen again on that run.

Anyone any ideas.......something is getting too hot under the bonnet? Dizzy ? Coil ? Fuel evaporation ?

Thanks,
Conor.

Hi Conor,

An idle mixture that is too lean will result in hesitation as you describe. When idling, if you raise each carburettor lift pin (behind the dashpot) in turn, what does that do to the idle speed?

Ron.

Unlikely to be vaporisation as you can get it going again. coils/condensers/points if Ron's mixture check doesnt help i think?

Thanks Ron . Will give that a go and report back at the weekend

Thanks for that

Hi Conor,
This sounds very similar to a problem I have had recently (see the thread I started in Sept - Carburettors) the advice from Sydneyrover (Ron) and Stina was excellent, the symptons you describe sound the same, the carbs was the problem, i.e. well out of balance, mixture on each carb was out and the linkages needed some adjustment, also the dwell angle was out, put all this right and the engine is running "as sweet as a nut"
Hope this helps.
Best Regards DAV8
Dave.
