Speedometer

hi, having changed my speedometer in my p6 v8 auto because it was reading low I was told that I had a 2000 speedo in hence the low reading.
The speedo that I removed had the ref. SN5345/08AS 1504.
The replacement speedo which seems to show the correct readings (according to my sat nav) has ref no. SN5345/04AS 1248
What is the correct ref number for a series 2 v8 auto.
Thanks
Mike

As I understand it, the last group of four digits in the part number is the speedo calibration in revolutions per mile. Was the old speedo something like 18% slow?

SN5345/04AS 1248

I have a V8 speedo here and the TPM is 1248.

IIRC the V8 speedo reads up to 140mph, but the 2000/2200 doesn't go that high.

I've had V8 speedos (and I'm sure that 2000/2200 would be the same) that read slow, and I had one that got to about 70mph and wouldn't get any faster, and believe me, the car was going a lot faster than that!

Thanks Harvey
I'm in the process of taking the instrument panel out, hence the comments re speedos. I will be checking the angle bits and cable as I have a bouncing speedo. Do you know anyone that refurbished them as I'd like a good steady speedo.
Cheers

not checked my speedo yet ..but it does bounce a bit or to be precise.waver around a few mile per hour. not all the time. I have put to down to cable on way out/dry/sticking and have sourced replacement from Wins .just not got around to fitting it ! ( v8 by the way) not checked mph for accuracy yet .however next year ..will run it against brothers new car and a sat nav.see if it actually in ball park for 30.40.50. and 60 ..( did go up to 70 once but that was 2 years ago. )

Thanks Harvey

I have had good work from Mike Flannery www. magnetic-speedometer-repair.com , he is in the Forest of Dean

Firstly; a very Happy New Year to you all!

BOP's speedo (V8S) has been flicking about wildly for a long time & I've put off doing anything with it because I suspected the cable was kinked or similar & I've never got round to changing it for one of my spares.

However, I have a spare '140 mph' speedo in a spare dashboard that I thought I'd try first. It works very smoothly :) but reads low by around 15-20%. Is it from a 2000TC or 2200TC?

From comments above, I can probably get my original speedo repaired? Does anyone have any recent experience / recommendations? I want to keep the right mileage - can I 'wind' them back / forwards?

Another query is whether the pointer pulls off the front to enable the unit to be dismantled?

I have had my speedometer overhauled and calibrated for a 5 speed gearbox by Speedy Cables. It now read spot on and is very smooth. So I am happy even though they took their time to do it. About two months if I remember correctly.

That's 'cos they are "Speedy Cables", not "Speedy Instruments".

I had my speedo done by them years back, and it did take a while but it was worth the wait.
