Sparky goes for a ride

Fit Fuel Injection they said, it's more reliable they said, Megasquirt's the route to go they said.

:(

Don't know for sure. I was happily cruising along and the battery just died. It has enough power to run the radio, but put the sidelights on and the radio goes off. So, very little battery power.

A bit annoying breaking down in the right hand lane of a busy roundabout in the rush hour  although I did learn a few new words.

You can't blame fitting EFI for a dead battery or failed charging circuit :(
I do feel you pain though as I am thinking of fitting MS myself....

True, but I bet it's something I bu%%$ered up when fitting it. It is a bit complimicated that lot.

check the little wire on the alternator.

I have been caught with it before, if it falls off the warning light does come on and it does actually charge. Also sometimes the alternator doesnt kick in, I had this on my SD1 Vitesse and after replacing the alternator it did the same thing. Need to tickle the throttle a bit to wake it up, my defender is the same but I can live with it.

No shame in a lift home. happens to us all at somepoint.

Definitely check the little wire as Arthuy say. A friend of mine has MS'd his defender and fitted a new alternator that had the signal wire fitted to the wrong terminal and that led to flat battery and a breakdown.

But I bet your fuel economy is steller on the back of a truck!

This was the joke when my P6 came back over the Alps on the back of a hired VW recovery truck, I was getting about 38mpg according to the computer. Far higher than I ever would driving the car.

check the little wire on the alternator.

I had been told to insert a diode into the alternator wire which feeds the warning light as sometimes there can be a small amount of feedback down this wire, which can keep the main relay open i.e. the engine doesn't turn off when you turn the ignition off. I did this and it still wouldn't turn off. The wiring wasn't great so I rewired this bit and removed the diode. It does still run on sometimes so I installed a switch into the relay feed (85 not 30 :) ).

Didn't the ammeter warn about the battery that was only discharging for some time?

There was no warning at all. I had put some petrol in and it started perfectly after that, then two miles later it just stopped.

No ignition lights, no radio, no sidelights, nothing. I pushed it off the busy roundabout  and after a few minutes the ignition lights came on and the radio would work. I had the equivalent electrical power of an AA battery. Thinking it was something I had done, I had it dropped off at a local megasquirt expert. He charged the battery, and got nothing. The battery had actually failed, almost totally, instantly.

New battery on, and now Sparky is back to his old self.

MPG was indeed superb, 8 miles with no fuel at all, so very pleased with that. Only cost me £50 :p
