spark plug spanner

If you know any kids that do metalwork at school (do they still teach metalwork in schools these days?) buy an ordinary plug socket and get them to turn it down on the lathe when nobody's looking......

love the idea lol doubt they do probably not safe enough anymore

I ended up going to halfords and comparing them all till i found one that was a little thinner and that did the trick if that's any use?

Hi, I use an old box spanner type with the 'U' shaped handle removed and a 3/8"
socket welded in the end. Had it for years!

Go Harvey's route.
I just ground down a socket with a dremel until the diameter was small enough.
Has been fine ever since, just be careful to keep it as even as possible.
Quicker than trying to find one that fits

Look in the boot ! original rover plug spanner ! works a treat . I have loads of plug spanners collected through the years ,motorcycle , lawn mower , chain saw , strimmer . Whatever ! The plug spanner , in the tool kit is the one , especially if used with the screwdriver to turn the shaft

I use a Japanese Koken sparkplug socket, dont know if the same size is still available, I got mine in about 1996.

alot of schools dont teach metalwork or woodwork anymore, they teach kids how to make stuff out of materials they will likely never come into contact with in the real world! plus schools dont seem to teach quality anymore, or patience, so you socket will probably come back either chewed like a dogtoy or hacked to bits!

I think they call it resistant materials these days

give it to a student? if it doesnt involve 3D printers they wouldn't have a clue. tother way is pop your socket in your drill press and use it as a lathe with a suitable abrassive (can leave that to your imagination angle grinder etc).

A long while ago Elora sold spark plug spanners as long bi hex 7/16 BSW sockets. These are ideal for the rover V8s as they are very slim with plenty of clearance when fitted over the plug. Hex sockets (13/16 AF) are usually too thick especially cheap ones as to make up for poor metal quality the walls are made thicker.
Aero spec sockets are very thin walled and some makers supply spark plug sockets in that range in 1/2 or 3/8 drive.

If you have later heads from a 3.9 the holes have a larger diameter which means most sockets fit...
