Sorry paint code advice again...

Hi,
It's been awhile since I have posted anything on the forum but I have searched everywhere to get a recognisable paint code for Venetian Red.. I have spoken to several paint suppliers but have had no joy? I have taken the car back to bare metal replacing doors etc along the way. The car has few original panels left. Can anyone point me in the right direction for a code as I have tried Rudiger's site but the codes on there apparently are not right according to the suppliers I have contacted.

If I can't get the code then it does leave me the option of changing the colour!!

Hi, The trouble is that the way paint is mixed nowadays has changed from percentage to by weight, so it takes a good man on the 'paint scheme' to match it. Either take a sample of the colour from a panel in and compare it to the 'chip' books or get it spectrographed or even just pick one from the book you think is close to what you want.

It looks as though that colour was used when the BL empire was just starting and the same paint code was often used in different BL brands but referred to as a different colour . I see Land Rover also used that paint name but it wasn't until the middle 1980's . The code was LRC440 . Whether its the same colour I don't know. Its also coming up on another LR web site as BL code CCL. and on another BL colour coding site as Venetian Red BLVC440 / CCL. Colours starting in C under the BL coding are red colours. I agree it may be better to get your paint matched of an existing panel and if you are doing the whole car , due to aging of existing paints it wont show if it is slightly different shade to original. I run a 1955 Land Rover in Grey and the LR community has come to the conclusion that no two vehicles in that colour are the same from the factory.

looks awful similar to early (pre suffix)mini tartan red too, to me ,from the picture

not easy to find an image of orginal paint (ie not fresh from a respray) either
but going from memory it looks nearer than photos suggest

edit- and dont forget there's probably 5 or 6 shades of each colour too.!

Thanks for the knowledgeable replies. I am of the mindset to go with a shade a red which I like rather than trying to match as in reality the car isn't a survivor as such ( if it was I wouldn't be painting it!!) I am happy to go off piste colour wise.I quite like the Tartan red that has been used on other old British cars so I may well look into that. Looking at the RAL colour charts there are a few that are close to the original so again another option. I have always gone with original colours when I did my old VW's but you could get them....
 
I found car colour code on inner wing but when checked a small sample it proved different to actual colour on car ..seems a previous owner had it resprayed and wasn't colour code on car inner panel! ended up taking lower rear panel under bumper off and into a professional paint supply shop. left it for 48 hours and picked up half litre matched paint in cellulose with thinners to suit. had that lower panel resprayed after fixing 'chips' and minor rust areas. checked. in daylight after refitting... perfect colour match. intend to do more later in year on next year and will get paint match again. 2 trips and possibly slightly more expensive ? but worth it to me to keep colour all around car exact match rather than original 'code' colour that would involve a total respray. If you doing full respray? colour is of course your choice ( don't forget to check out suitable undercoats. ) you have choice any colour or going back to original. If we keeping car makes no odds. If we want to sell on later? many buyers are wary colour changes ..
