snatching in and out of gear

Being overfull will cause its own problems, but it shouldn't have any effect on how the clutches themseves perform. If it's way over the top now then it may well have been low when you had the problem, and raising the level has cured that, but you've just gone a bit OTT. Overfilling it could cause it to eject fluid out of the breather, and cause leaks from places that are under the fluid level that shouldn't be, but if it's not ejecting fluid, and it's not massively overfilled, then I'd be inclined to use it and see what happens. If the clutches fail then there won't have been anything else you could have done to prevent that happening.

I think that's my answer... - thanks for your counsel as always. Going to take it very easy on it so it can get to wroxhall - hopefully with the original engine if i can get my bum in gear!

Only thing with that is if you're changing the engine you're so close to having the box out as well, that would be the ideal time to try to fix both at the same time. I'd leave the engine as is until you know the status of the box.

You're right of course... just seemed right to have its original engine for the 50th anniversary of the v8 show when it's one of the very first. But that could be cutting my nose off to spite my face.....
