Slow starting V8 - Turns fast but turns for ages

I have unceased my V8 engine and i now have another problem.... It starts but has to be turned for ages, then slows down, starts firing, speeds up and starts. Its almost as if it doesnt fire on all cylinders at first.

Any ideas?

My guess of an explanation is that as its turning a: the battery voltage drops so it slows, and b: compression builds up also causing a slowing. Then it eventually fires and off you go.

If it was siesed then I suggest you replace the plugs / dizzy cap / rotor etc, also remove the carb pistons and gently polish the needles (they often get a white powder build up on) use petrol or brasso (but be very gentle, don't want to remove any metal from the needle).

Once you get it running, I would warm it right up gently, then rev it up a bit, just to get oil pushed right round the engine.

Hope this helps

It wont keep running once fired so it could be any one of those. problem is that it has sat for 10 years so i honestly didnt expect it to run at all!

I cleaned all the plugs up while unceasing (had to take them out anyway) so a new set are probably long overdue

What kind of hassel should i expect on a 90,000 mile V8 on an auto box. Is it worth rebuilding or replacing anyway?

Thanks,

Alan

Well, its happy days, brought new leads, plugs and cap etc and it fired up pretty much straight away with a charged battery.. Enjoyed it so much it ran out of fuel!
