Sky dishes

Why did we ever need sky dishes ?If we can get Freeview and Freeview HD using the old aerial for UHF transmissions , were we conned into having dishes put up ?

Hi, considering that other cable operators are offering more or less everything
that Sky offer plus up to 50mb broadband.....Yes!

Not that we had much of a choice back then.

lot more bandwidth through a microwave satellite dish than through uhf over the air...

cable should be better still, but unlike early satellite it's a computer network effectively and the signals now are compressed which comes into it. compression on satellite is currently most advanced hence the better picture quality, but the others will catch up soon enough.

But Freeview can never give the same amount of channels that Sky (or more accurately, satellite TV) can. (Sat frequencies are in the 10's of GHz range, Freeview can only get up to ~850MHz (i.e. 0.85 GHz))

Granted, you can get some "sky" channels via cable (Universal (neé Hallmark), for example)... but here in North Wales cable TV is something of an enigma!

EDIT: Trust rockdemon to steal my train of thought!

Hold on, are you sure about cable "should be better" than a sat?...

yes - cable should be better, reason it isnt is that it's currently still using mpeg 2 where sky is using mpeg 4. New tivo boxes do decode mp4 but they dont broadcast it yet.

What bandwidth can cable carry?

cable is a fibre IP network - skys the limit...

Oh, sorry! I always think of "cable" as electrical (wire/coax). Of course, optic fibre carries light which is an even higher frequency (i.e. has larger bandwidth)!

I've had Sky for 19 years , thought I was being conned , told them Virgin could give me more for less and they threw in a HDbox and free broadband etc to keep me as a customer
