show me your propshaft to differential bolts! :)

I've come to realise that the rear end of my car is a bit of a grab bag of incorrectly sized bolts, washers and nuts.

I used what I thought was a factory prop shaft bolt to buy some replacements, now I realise that it was probably a replacement for a factory one and is too long.

Can someone measure their V8 propshaft bolt and put up a photo of how it's meant to be bolted back together?

much appreciated!

Hi,

Can't give you the length of the bolt off the top of my head I'm afraid - my parts catalogues list it as "539841 - Special Bolt" I assume the unthreaded bit on the OEM bolt is tied up on the diameter to engage snugly in the flanges.

It's definitely 3/8"-24 UNF though, and I replaced a couple of of them using a length long enough for the Nyloc nut but not too long to foul the propshaft/UJ.

Cheers,

Stan

Thanks Stan!

yes the bolts that were in mine appear to be a mix of original, but then they are too long to insert from the differential side. So someone has put them in backwards (ie the reverse of what you have shown above).

I'm taking my replacements and machining them down a fraction at work.

P6 Propshaft bolts are 3/8 UNF x 1 1/8 inch long and were originally GKN grade "T" which is listed as 'Very High Tensile'.
At the diff end of the prop, they are removalable from the flange, but only in one position, so you have to rotate the prop/flange to take them all out.
The same bolts are used at front and rear of the prop. We are currently sourcing stock of new bolts.
