Series 1 Steering Wheel Removal - no PAS

Hi team

I would like to remove the wheel in order to fit a new turn signal switch. The manual talks about a special screw at the back of the wheel to release it. I’ve poked and prodded the back of the plastic oblong casing that fits between the wheel and the dash but I can’t locate a hole in the back, and even if I did I’m not sure how I would find space to insert a screwdriver. What am I missing? Any assistance greatly appreciated!

The Badge bar across the front is held on by two phillips head screws on the rear of the cross bar. They are a pain to get to, you need either a really short screwdriver or a right angle one. once removed you can lift off the bar top which reveals the big nut holding the wheel on. You will find it is rather tight on the splines, you may need a puller.

IF all you want to do is change the turn signal, the top has four screws in it . Remove them and you can manouvre the top part out of the way to access the indicator mechanism without wheel removal. You might need to drop the lower metal cover to get to the plug

The special screws are for the ignition switch mechanism. they hold it on the shaft and are designed to only be tightened up. You don't need to touch it.

Hi Mike

Thanks very much for the quick response. I have had another squirm around the footwell today and I think I’m going to leave this for my garage to tackle. I have a complete NOS switch to fit and one of the problems I’m hoping to solve is a lack of ‘cancel‘ after completing a turn so I think it’s probably best to get the wheel off and make sure everything is going to work as it should with the new unit. I might also try and find a replacement oblong plastic box in the meantime as that is looking a bit the worse for wear!

If you change your mind and decide to take the wheel off, do not remove the centre nut after loosening it.
Tap the cross bar near the centre and that should get the wheel moving. If you remove the nut first, the wheel is likely to move off the splines quite rapidly and hit you in the mouth. Experience talking, many, many years after my first attempt.
Now have a later model wheel, mainly because of the pain of removing the badge bar from the original wheel, even after getting new screws for it.

Next question - how to remove centre on a S2 S wheel - not clear to me how this works, dont want to mark it.
thanks

From my experience, with great difficulty. I don't have a mark proof answer. Need to prise out the centre cover piece, no doubt appropriate body work tools other than a screwdriver (which I used) exist. Good luck.
Once you have the centre piece out, getting it back easily is the next challenge!

Thanks. I have a kit of trim removal tools, several of which are plastic, so I will try one with a thin end and hope it doesnt break.
