Securon Inertia Reel Rear Seat Belts - what am I missing?

Hello all,

After refurbishing my tatty seats, I'm putting them back in the car, along with some new Securon 254 rear seat belts.

I know there are issues with needing spacers to mount the reel to avoid the belt dragging, as well covered on this forum over the years. I have spacers of about 20mm height ready to go on.

When I've got the rear seat squabs in place, I can't for the life of me see how the inertia reel will fit between the mounting point and the back of the seat. Hopefully the attached photo will show what I mean. The threaded hole (shown with a bolt in it for clarity) seems to be too far forward and "outboard" in the car to allow the reel to sit anywhere near the shelf. I'm assuming the belt needs to emerge from the reel towards the front of the car?

If anyone has a photo of a successful Securon 254 installation on the back shelf, I'd be very grateful to see it. My car is a Series 1 2000 if that makes any difference.

Many thanks.

Thanks Rockdemon - we definitely have different mounting locations. My mounts are about where the wrinkle in your parcel shelf is on the first photo - tight up against the seat back.

So all those lists that say Securon 254 fits all models 1963-77 are wrong! It would be possible to add new mounts in the rear-most location, putting spreader plates under the metal shelf. But by the time I'd discovered the problem I'd as already made the holes in my vinyl shelf trim. I've ordered a set of static belts which will be less convenient, but should fit .

Is that really gonna hold in an accident?
I have them done up VERY tight and have given them a big tug but will confess I did have the same worry.
At the worst if it fails and moves, it is only adding an inch to the travel and that might even be a benefit, as it would lessen the deceleration effect .....

That mounting method would not be adequate in the event of a moderate collision and would not pass MOT requirements. I would strongly advise that it is secured directly straight through the parcel shelf with spreader plate underneath.

I have my doubts too, and may do that, but can you explain what purpose the bracket has (in a fitting kit from the manufacturer) if not as I have done? Only curious......

That's What I'm going to do. I've got some 1/8" plate.

I got some odd bracket/spacer in with my 254 kit which allows it to fit. View attachment 13475

I think that plate is only meant for fitting these to the front seats as it allows the reel and end of the belt to use the one fixing at the bottom of the B/C post. Later posts in this thread seem to suggest the S1 and S2 cars rear parcel shelf fitting are in different locations, have I got that right?

I also fitted static belts to the rear of my S1, the only issue I found with doing that is making sure they are actually rear belts. The front belts are a lot longer so don't quite tighten up enough to use effectively in the back. See halfway down this thread Rear seat belt fit

I can't tell you if it is an S1/S2 base unit thing. Chris York or Chris Wilson will be your man for that. It is a PITA though as I bought the Securons before checking.

In my car (1970) the original holes were also tight against the seat back, so i used the brackets that were included with the belts, but bolted them both on the original holes and a new whole using another plate underneath. They are still a tight fit, but they look as though they will do the job if required (hope there won't be such a need though!).

I personally would have put the reels with the belt coming from underneath , rather than over the top. The reel is then not trying to rotate around the anchorage, this would put less bending moment on the fixings and parcel shelf.

I think that you are right.
It has been a few years now, and the only thing that i remember is that i have tried various positions, with not much success. Looking again at these photos, it seems inevitable that the belt will have to rub on the seat back, otherwise the installation will have one or more weak points. I have to revisit the installation some time soon.

Looking into this now. My S2 has enough clearance from the bolt hole to fit a belt reel. I found Hemco down here in Oz do a belt which feeds out from the top - No 1600051. The belt feeds ~50mm above the base plate, so I plan to fit a 19mm spacer under it over the full area of the base plate (marine ply already on hand), which should be as safe as sitting flat on the rear deck. The base is 75mm front to back, something less from bolt hole to front; 90mm wide over the whole assembly. A 2M long belt should be enough ?

Doing this now. Have a 254 in hand. If I try to mount it flat the adjusting knob thing (that changes the angle it will unreel at) fouls the side trim, on the RHS of the car. It should work fine on the LHS . Is there a 254 with the adjuster on the LHS? I like Demetris' set up, as it will avoid the belt rubbing on the seat squab top...but how would you do that extra hole on the LHS, with the tank filler hose in there?
