Love them, great cars and fantastic value for money too. Always enjoy getting behind the wheel of my mate's early Avocado 2600 when I have the chance, it feels solid, well panted on the road and very comfortable..

"Well panted" I should hope so too , Nothing worse than bad pants !

Opps! I shall blame multitasking Stina... drinking tea and typing are obviously not very copatable!

There is well under 1000 sd1 left in the UK so pretty rare.

Vittese models survive well over all. 2000, 2300 and 2600 version are rare as was the vm diesel. All are pretty decent power wise.

I love the orignal steering wheel, they also help with road vibrations. I fitted a wooded moto lita which was awful.

Shame you dont see cars for 1970/1980 as much. I same a K reg cavalier on my way home which is pretty rare too.

Colin

Apart from a few highly desirable performance cars, the 80's compared to the 60's and early 70's doesn't really capture the same automotive passion and survival rates. They are slowly being recognised as classics, and it's nice to see some 80's era cars at the shows that have survived, cherished and even better when they are used daily.

I've just bought an SD1 for a quick project  , just wondered if there's enough love for them here to put a thread up, or if they're still hated as not a real Rover then I won't so as not to offend? :D

I think most folk really like the SD1 overall. But as a daily they can be a bit wearing.

I recently sold my SD1 VDP EFI as the cost of replacing rust with metal and sorting some engine woes would have just harelipped the bishop. I have replaced the SD1 with a 1987 BMW E32 which is in the same category as the SD1 and just 2 years newer. Unsurprisingly, the BMW is a complete revelation on how a well-built 27 year-old quality car should be  Aside from that lovely V8, the BMW wins in every way for me(dives for cover).

Over here they were very - very rare. I was a little young to remember, but i guess that they were never officially imported. After all our tax system doesn't do any favours at anything above 1929 cc. I must admit that i liked a lot their shape though and i can still remember where and when i spoted each of the few that i have seen in flesh. Most of them were thoroughly rusty, RHD on UK plates that somehow ended up here and eventually abandoned in the early '90s. At the same time a matt black, natural rat look series 1 V8 on German plates was spotted for a few days near my then apartment in Thessaloniki, a nice red Vitesse in my home town in central Greece owned by an English family on summer vacations, a very nice light green series 1 V8 on French plates also here in Thessaloniki, probably just visitors, and the last one that i spotted over here, in the mid '90s, a very late immaculate silver 2600 VDP that was a personal import from Belgium. Those days it used to be parked out in the same street for a couple of years, in sort of daily use but somehow i lost it later. I always wondered what happened to this car. Athough that there's not much chance of owning one, i suppose that if you like a lot the shape and the noise, you can forgive some faults...

I can't understand how any P6 fan could dislike the SD1. I love them. After all they gave my P6 unleaded heads, an LT77, alloys and even a front bumper! What's there not to like?? :D .

Regards,
Dave

I used to be a bit indifferent until I bought a Vitesse 9 months ago. It replaced a very nice P6 V8S that went up in smoke. Very different to a P6 and not easy to make direct comparisons. Still own a P6 - bought a fab 4 pot in January. Love them both. Even the SD1 despite the trials and tribulations of a long drawn engine transplant for the SD1 thanks to me not spotting a duff engine when I bought it. Its running brilliantly now though - in fact out today for a run to work and back

Gerald,

In answer to your question!

Not sure when it was fitted. I considered replacing it but to be honest I've really grown to like it.

Dave

I think I like it . Im not sure . Depends whats happening out the back - looks like a P6 one from down here > would have to match for me [ I'm ADD ]. Otherwise is a bit like having two different sets of hubcaps on the car .
I had a Ford salesman as a friend once . He said "if it doesn't fit on the front > try the back . If that don't fit - use a hammer "
I like the look of your car by the way . The SD1 bumper gives it a chunkier look .Nice . You may have started a trend .
Is this the one with the SD1 heads as well as the obvious .
Gerald

Gerald,

rear is still wearing the original P6 bumper, so no match I'm afraid  . This car came with the bumper and wheels fitted, and I fitted the LT 77. My almond car came fitted with a LT 77 and the SD1 heads are on the white car. I gave the heads to a friend of mine who suspected his car had a cracked head (was a leaky heater after all that) and I bought the car from him later. I never took much notice of the rear bumper as the rear end looks a bit shabby already! The valance is in grey primer with the last few years and it has a chunky tow bar. I think it gives the front of the car a more aggressive stance, especially with the 205/60/15 tires. Looks a bit messy with the crusty front valance though, but I have a new one ready to paint and fit (along with painting the rear and fitting new rear wings). I suspect the bumper was fitted after a front end knock as the valance is full of filler and there's a slight dent in the front of the bonnet. It does occasionally upset the purists though.

Mmmmmm nice tyres! as for the front bumper I will have to wait until Stockholm syndrome kicks in

I guess I can see how it would grow on you it has that 70's (late) period look about it and looses some of the anemia the original bumpers had going on.

The image that it conjures in my mind is the opening sequence of the professionals where Bodie and Doyle rock on up in their Mark II Capri except now its your SD1 enabled Mark II P6B, god now that I have put that thought in black and white I am likely to be stuck with it for life
