SD1 Police car

This AM on the A3 near Wimbledon I had an A reg SD1 Police car behind me at the lights .Didn't appear to have it's lights and signs covered up and travelling very slowly so we left it behind
Bit of a strange feeling as when these were current , there were times I would not have been happy to have one behind me but these days I'm boringly legal

I know what you mean Dave. I bet you thought,"oh no" for a second or two  I know I used to occasionally drive around without any legal right whatsoever back in the eighties as a soppy teenager. So one of those in my mirror would've been a great laxative indeed

I distinctly remember the Met area cars at Hounslow; 2600s with Minilites fitted. I thought they looked very good. Strangely, there doesn't appear to be any SD1s fitted with Minilites nowadays which is puzzling.

Would that be because magnesium Minilites last only so long before the metal decomposes in some way?
Back in the 80's there were loads of Police SD1's with Minilites going through the auction at Mitcham

Working in (and living near...) Kingston I see this old squad car every now-and-again and it really does look a daunting old piece of kit... You'd have known you were for it if you saw that SD1 approaching you at speed

I wonder why the Police opted to add Minilite wheels when Rover offered their own alloy wheels as an option...?!

Anyhow, long live the Police SD1...!!!

Minilites were to help cool the brakes on police cars , my old 2600 met police car is around London with minilites fitted ( I sold it about 2/3 years ago)

The sd1 you spotted is owned by the met still ( as per the armoured p6) hence the reason it doesn't need to cover up the police bits like I'm required too

In other words, Dave. What you saw in your mirror that looked like an SD1 police car, was in fact an SD1 POLICE car! You can go and change your trousers now.....
