Scarab the Rover..

The two bolts under the springs on your pic #2 can be adjusted to set the gear lever to sit at 3rd and 4th. So if you just push it forward without any sideways movement, you should get a 3rd gear. If you set it here, it should give good resistance to pushing over to reverse.

I use Redline MTL in my LT77 as it has proven to be a very good oil for the box and gives a nice slick change.

Oh I see. One bolt higher on the left and lower on the right. Gearstick would then lean to the right to put it nearer to 3rd gear. Makes sense.

Update on progress. i've now got the gearbox i want painted and have assembled the gear selector rear part. I have gone with the poly bushes which were easy enough to fit. It selects all the gears nicely although reverse gear can be selected too easily. it could be i haven't set the spring correctly. Can anyone offer advice on this? I have heard that you just need to 'clout it' over to the left but it selects nicely and there doesn't seem to be any 'lifting' of such to get it into reverse............

I am also going to use this comma oil in the box unless someone says don't. What came out was rather thick and brown/really dark red. I've read that a good 75/90 can be used. Is this ok?

The 75-90 gear oil is not suitable for an LT77.
It will be very hard to select gears when the box is cold.
Redline MTL or Castrol Syntrans are what you need.

Yes, you just adjust them to set the bias to 3rd/4th and slight tension on the springs.

Ok, I have been told about this. The oil above I had sitting in my workshop.

Those 2 mentioned aren't cheap!

I paid about £18/L but that was ten years ago. It's on ebay at £26.95 inc vat and delivery

I know you're spending out a lot of money at the moment with the gearbox and bits to fit it, but the MTL is definitely worth it

I guess your right. £50 to fill the gearbox with oil (if I bought 2L) or I guess rebuilding the box will be 10 times that.

It isnt a cheap conversion this, but were almost there with the parts list.

not much to update unfortunately. What i have managed to do is move my cars around a bit. The rover is now in my garage where i have the tools to get on with this now. I still have 2 missing pieces of the puzzle for the gearbox swap. Yesterday i managed to drain the gearbox and engine. i've left both for the day to drain.

One thing i can confirm is that these P6's are bigger than i remember. With it in my garage, there isn't much room left now!

Just to add the box is designed for the thinner oils and if you use the 75-90 gear oil , in cold weather it can shear the drive to the oil pump in the gearbox

Years ago I had an LT77 looked at by an established gearbox guy. His opinion was that ATF did not provide adequate lubrication for the bearings, his recommendation was to use the thinnest engine oil available, so for years I used Mobil 1 0w 20 with Moly gearbox treatment added with no issues at all and good gear changes.
It is only recently I have been using Syntrans.

Interesting thread. I rebuilt my LT77 and used ATF, and I've not been happy with the gear changes, especially when cold. I think a fluid change is going to happen.

t is only recently I have been using Syntrans.
What differences did you observe, when moving to the Syntrans from the 0w20?

TBH I haven't noticed any change. The box I have has always been a little 'reluctant' to get 2nd when cold, which is why it went to be looked at, if I had some thin engine oil lying about come change time and pennies were short I would throw it in for sure, along with a dose of Moly.
I bought the Syntrans after reading a review, you have to try these things. It does seem odd putting engine oil in a gearbox but there ya go.

I've almost forgotten about 1st gear. I almost always start in 2nd, saves rolling the dice when changing from 1st to 2nd to see how clean it's going to be.
But we're spoilt with the 'big' engine. In the words of someone else who drove the car, "What's the point of the gearbox, with an engine like that you can leave it in 5th all day?" :)

rare day off today so made a start on things. Weather wasn't great but i was in the dry in the garage. One thing that needed attention was the sump. It was leaking and needed sorting so that was 1st on my list.

It did look rather clean to be fair. Small amount of sludge in the base of the sump but it has been cleaned out and painted.

So with the 5 speed gearbox to be fitted, i made a start on this. Off came the exhaust and i only managed to snap 1 manifold bolt. Not bad that. I'll be replacing them all anyway.

I gave Wins a call on Monday as i was informed that i could get a speedo cable that would fit the LT77 and the P6 speedo head. Geoff said use an auto one and chop the large nut off one end. (not sure what its called). i closed the LT77 securing 'fork' up slightly to take the cable and then fitted the other end to the angle drive piece that connects to the P6 speedo. Easy as that Geoff said.

Then before calling it a day, i read somewhere on here that it was a good idea to check the LT77 internal pump works in the gearbox. So i filled it with some ATF to test it only. It will be drained out.

So that proved the internal pump works.

I have purchased 2ltr of Castrol Syntrans (under its new name) 75W/90 fully synthetic from Opie Oils. So that will be going in the gearbox like you have recommended. Think i deserve a beer now and sit in front of the fire.

I was looking at oils, gearbox drain imminent. So would Syntrans be Ok for a 4 cylinder too? Castrol GTX SAE 20 says the Book.
