Scammers

Hi all

We vett everyone who wishes to join the forum, and there are a lot, my personal record for vetting applicants was 114 in a singe day. However, just now and again a scammer or other undesirable slips through.

If you have asked for something in the 'Wanted' section please look out for the warning signs.

1/. Red flag if someone sends you a private message - most people would post on the thread, or at least post that they will send you a PM.

2/. Red flag if someone says that his mate has one of those, and he'll fix you up. Try to get him or his mate to post pictures and more details on the thread.

3/. Red flag if they ask to to pay by ebay gift card, or paypal family and friends etc. Look into anything out of the ordinary to ensure you can get your money back if the items fail to materialise.

4/. Red flag if something just seems 'dodgy.' If it feels dodgy, it probably is. Check it out thoroughly before parting with any money.

Yes. I was taken by someone in the forum with all these red flags checked off! As it was the forum my guard was down. It sounded too good to be true.

This forum? I'm surprised at that. It wasn't me was it?....

All sound advice, but even if you're careful you can still get caught. This kind of thing is rife.

Another thing to look for is how long someone has been a member here. Recently arrived and it raises suspicion, and if they've been here a while, check their post count, zero isn't good, and if they have lots of posts, read through as many as you can and that should give you more of an idea of who you might be dealing with.

I bought something from ebay from someone I recognised as a very well known forum member. It didn't arrive and he ignored my messages for weeks. In the end, I actually PMd him on here and asked if he would like to discuss the matter on the open forum?

Turned up the following day with a load of apologies. A bit underhand of me, but it was holding up my rebuild.

No Harvey, it wasn't you :) :)

I once advertised on a local club web site (in Oz) and had replies from 2 scammers - one in UK touting a very nice cheap P6B, all I had to do was pay shipping; other was in USA using an engine pic easily found on the web.

The only thing more red than Quattro's 'flags' (above) was my face when I was taken for a ride over some P6 parts in the UK.

Two more scammers banned today

Please be careful who you send money to.

Richard

I fear I may have been scammed by someone on this forum who offered me seat covers for my Rover 3500s NADA. The entire payment process was from the beginning strange but I ignored the warning bells going off in my head. I hope I am proved wrong but something doesn't pass the smell test.
