Rust Free California car isn't... A moment of silence please...

Mike,

Yes! Much better to see the car go to good use instead of being binned.

I have one of the rear window stops pulled and put to one side for you - I will try to get to the other side today (maybe), but I need to move the car to be able to open the door.

It is an A/C car and you are more than welcome to the bulkhead. The boot has already been cut out and sent to New Jersey to find a new life in SDibbers' car, so the floor forward is all still intact. Can you get me a photo of the two areas in question and mark up what you want cut? I would also look into estimated freight costs if I were you - I hope they don't want stupid money as I want to see these bits put to use.

I am learning my way around the Plasma cutter, so my cuts aren't always pretty. The unit is a cheap Chinese unit, but it gets pretty good reviews online - $230 from Amazon - plus $20 for extra consumables. The metal is dirty - surface rust, undercoat, paint. etc. so sometimes it's not easy to strike an arc - although it is much easier when you don't forget the ground clamp!

It's not going to be cut up quickly, but I hope to make steady progress as I want the space back to get to work on the Wild Rover.

I'll post some photos later.

Oh wow that is excellent news! I'll track down some pictures of the areas I'm after. There are a few companies doing USA to AUS now at reasonable rates, i'll do some shopping and try to find the packing slip from when I bought the power windows to get an idea of the weight and cost (though they came from England). I put my 3.54:1 F series diff in last week and finished converting the fuel tap to electric using a door lock mechanism so the car is actually coming together and looking like a Rover should. The next big job is the sill panel for the air con and my new 15 circuit breaker board replacing the fusebox...

Be careful with the Plasma Cutter they are Highly addictive!

Mike,

I am heading out to feed my Plasma cutter addiction - I am steering clear of the areas you mentioned until you can give me some idea of how much you need cut. Later, when I pull my finger out, I'll post a picture of the window stops I got for you ;)

Meantime, here's a pic of my engine bay and firewall - this is what you're looking for, right?
Anaheim-Santa Ana-Garden Grove-20150328-00517.jpg

Thankyou for taking that, I've been tearing my hair trying to find a clear shot of that part of the car... in words what I am after is the recessed horizontal section between the two sets of steering box mounts + any internal ducting that might be there. I'll have a play tonight with the photo and see if i can mark it up for you. The plastic pieces that are the central vent duct (and console if it is still there) would also be good.

Hey Mike,

Internal ducting might be a stretch mate - mine was all burny after the fire in Wild Rover and this car was missing most of it. I did manage to source some bits from Joseph Wilson in the UK - he might be someone to check with for those - I really don't know???

Mark up the pic as best you can and I'll see just how clean a job I can make of getting you what you want. meanwhile...

Chopped top anyone?

Or maybe the full convertible...?
IMG_20170114_152603.jpg

Now I know that most of you restoring your car have had one of those moments where you find something yucky - here's mine...
IMG_20170114_160150.jpg

But, how many of you have had a holy flurkin schnit moment? Cos here's mine...
IMG_20170114_160541.jpg

No, it's not just a snake skin - it's a full on snake, albeit a rather desiccated and very dead one, it certainly caused me to have a spontaneous bowel movement

I cut the roof off and was removing the headliner - first I found the wee mouse, and then I peeled back the headliner and found the snake carcass... I wonder if the snake went in after the mouse? It's head was jammed under the frame.

I called it a day not long after this. Can you blame me?

So you want the "shelf" part with the two rectangular cut outs? Should I go from inner wing (guard for the Aussie audience) to inner wing - shall I cut down into the vertical panel above the trans tunnel? I thought you were after the vertical panel bit where the steering column comes through... you tell me mate and I'll chop it - if there is any internal steel duct work I'll do what I can to salvage that as well - I'll have to turn the plasma cutter down from 11 ;)

I did say they were addictive! You'd better shorten the leads so you can't go beyond the Garage! yeah the shelf part with the two rectangular cut outs. My memory (having done what you are doing years ago) the firewall is made up of multiple layers so I suggest your inner wing to inner wing might be easiest as you could just cut bits off till that was ll that was left, or at least you could see what has to be cut. I only really need the bit between the two sets of steering box mounts (steering box and damper). I've never actually seen that panel in the flesh, only the heater version I have, so i don't know if I need the stuff below the holes or not

Markup below I hope...

Hi Mike.
I take it your car has no A/C?
I have fitted it (factory A/C) to non A/C cars. If it's a early car the centre vent and recycle inlet is already partly cut and taped over making installing easier. You will need the defector plate which is brazed into the main heater inlet, on non A/C cars the single deflector is screwed in place.
The bulkhead is the same once you have cut that recycle hole.
Will post a picture of this defector in a minute .
Regards.
Clive.

Thanks Clive that is a huge help!

Er can I have that bit too....
You could put the snake on Ebay, even do a package deal with the mouse! Looks like they are both already mummified!

Driver's side spring looks like it's had a hard life......

And as for that snake, I've sh*t myself just looking at the photo....

Armed with a fresh set of underwear I spent some more time cutting up the car today.

Bobtail anyone?
IMG_20170115_160216.jpg

Here are the rear window stops for Mike - the foam was gone on one and beyond saving on the other, still I am sure they'll work for you.

Wow they look excellent! i was expecting rust! foam isn't an issue, I'll get some stick on stuff from the rubber shop. I've marked the bit i'm after at the back up below on your bobtail shot (I hope).

Basically its the flatish sheet that goes under the tank plus acouple of inches each side. the point at which it meets the seat back is the inside line. the foremost line can be anyehwere from there back to about where the vapour tank is. Do remember the gas lines (+ fuel pump and control valve) are under there! and those two loose plates cover what is holding the diff up!

I sand blasted and powder coated them Mike ;)

I will have a look at the area in the daylight and let you know if it makes sense to me. It might take a bit to get to that as I am cutting so as to leave the running gear for last, but I will get there!

Whilst finishing off the brakes and replacing the dedion sliding joint i had a good look at the current repair and I think the piece I would need is just too hard to cut out in one piece. I would like the circular recess where the pipe go through though as the job they did is way too deep and it is next to impossible to get the nuts tight on the pipes....about an inch all round the dish would be great!

Mike,

I have the advantage of being able to peel this apart like an onion - I can imagine that installing or repairing bits on a complete car won't be quire so easy. I have made some more progress in the disassembly, but some serious rain stopped play over the weekend. I'll snap some pics to show you the progress when I have a mo.

Alan

The license plates, did you have any plans for those? I'm new to this group and I'd be interested in them for my project.

Well, it happened...
IMG_20170605_103823.jpg

The empty space on the drive is where the old beast has been living for the last several months. A mate offered to drag the car to his workshop where we would be free of adult supervision and have access to large power tools. More importantly tea would be available...

After only an hour or so, this happened.
IMG_20170610_115417.jpg

A few cups of tea and a sawzall saw this happen...
IMG_20170610_141957.jpg

I was wracked with guilt cutting up the old beast, fortunately this place was handy so, it's going in for some bodywork and a paint job on Monday...
IMG_20170610_145211.jpg

And that, as they say, is that.

I have some parts that will be shipped off to Oz in the near future to help Mike's car. The boot floor went to New Jersey for Steven's car and, I have salvaged a few bits and pieces for Clive in that there London. She gave what she could so that others may live on - RIP old girl.

The license plates, did you have any plans for those? I'm new to this group and I'd be interested in them for my project.
Sorry mate, the plates go on the wall of my garage along with the rest of my small but growing collection.
