Rover P6 Solid Roof (1974 Series II V8 Auto)

Hello fellow Rover enthusiasts and those refuse to let go of the past (as per myself).

Summer will soon be upon us, or so I have been told. And the time seems right to get rid of my Monte Carlo Webasto, and replace it with a sold roof so I can bake inside my car like a proper 1970's era motorist.

Actually the real reason is that I couldn't stand the noise it made at speed, the previous owner screwed it on himself (badly), and it was leaking into the passenger compartment and the sills until I covered it in duct tape and bubble wrap. Had to drain my sills out, but no big deal, thanks to Waxoyl, my sills are still mint! I know, I looked inside with a fibre-optic camera. I never actually had it open during the summer, because contrary to what you may think, sitting in traffic the sun bears down on you and cooks you. The triplex sundym glass actually did and does a phenomenal job of keeping the inside of the car relatively cool. Most of the heat came through the firewall anyway, due to V8ness.

Anyway... Should any of you have a sold roof for sale, I would be very keen to buy it off you.

Now I am off to read the for sale side, as I am a counter intuitive imbecile and didn't think to do it before writing this.

I had the same experience. I had a perfectly installed Webasto and I loved it on my last car, it started getting noisy over 60mph. My current car regularly runs at 130kph (82mph) on the French autoroutes and would be intolerable.

That's why I'd sell a metaphorical kidney for a factory Hollandia.. Both kidneys for the electric one.

Interesting to hear.

I've had a Webasto roof to go in my V8 for many, many years now but it looks like some P6 people think it would be a mistake.....:hmm:

I’ve got a roof & headlining available if you’re still looking.

Spiffing!

If you would be so kind as to tell me where you are and how much you would be looking for it, I would very much appreciate it. I am in NW London myself.

Regards,

Ivan

I personally wouldn't recommend it. But if you're a dab hand with the drill, rivet gun and silicone sealant, you can have the roof swapped back in the space of an afternoon. :cuppa:

So you're willing to potentially live on dialysis for the rest of your life in order to obtain an electric folding roof? o_O I don't think that would be a particularly good arrangement myself. There is only one roof that I would be willing to go to unreasonable lengths to get, the fabled Triplex Sundym Glass Roof! :D

Think about it, the rarest of all P6s (white 1963/64 2200TC, red leather with full headrest set, factory AC, icelert, power steering, triplex sundym roof)

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Why do you need a drill and a rivet gun to swap a roof panel?

And yet you've been told about two electric ones, and you haven't obtained either.

It would be very rare if it had a 2200TC engine in a 63/64 car, as they didn't come out until the 70s.

I’m on the Essex/Suffolk border, so not too far away. I’ll have to unwrap the roof, as it’s been packaged up for years! Pretty sure it’s ebony vinyl. You’re more than welcome to come up & make me an offer, no reasonable offers refused!

Metaphorical kidneys require only metaphorical dialysis.

The corner pieces at the top of the A pillars that join the chrome trim, those are riveted in place from the inside. I've been told that in order to remove the roof panel, they too need to be removed.

:hmm: Well excuse my lack of knowledge, but still, a 2000TC series I with air con and all the features mentioned would be pretty cool, and exceptionally rare. They make several mentions of AC in the P6 development video, yet I have never actually seen any P6s with factory AC. Perhaps they were fitted with AC mainly for the export market.

Excellent, not too far away. Only thing is, I have absolutely no idea what any of these things are worth. I was sort of hoping that you would give me a price. eBay has turned up nothing on current or completed / sold listings. So what would you be looking for it? :hmm:

Well of course, no one actually expects you to sell vital organs to obtain parts for your car. Unless of course you happen to be a high ranking CCP official with access to ##REDACTED##.

But it does annoy me that parts for Rovers can be rather difficult to come by. I got my P6 as my first car back in 2014, when I was in my early twenties. Mainly because I wanted something British, but also because it was cheap to ensure and cheap to buy, only cost me £2000. 32 miles through London every day for years, never missed a beat. But people don't seem to care. They'd rather have a Jaguar or a Ford or some disgusting hatchback.

I blame the teary eyed nostalgic peeps. The kind you meet at the Enfield Pageant of Motoring, dribbling over some Zodiac MK II that can barely get out of it's own way, with suspension more suited to a horse and cart than a motorcar. Yet those people have access to stands full of parts, and a Zodiac might command £12k ~ £15k+, but a Rover P4 100 in similar condition (which is a better car in my opinion), a mere £3500 ~ £5000.

Nostalgia is a hell of a drug. o_O

They were mostly seen in the US. I threw away the main part of that kit just a few weeks ago.

️️ - Threw away you say. Interesting. I mean everything has value to someone. One of my good friends who is a good twice my age, got lobbed out of his garage by TLF, something about redevelopment. As if you can replace industry with coffee shops and purveyors of worthless tat and expect to receive customers in an area full of needle pumpers and heated glass pipe enthusiasts, but I digress, I've been helping him sell off decades worth of bits he has amassed, unless something takes up an inordinate amount of room, you should try and sell it. 10% of something is better than 100% of nothing. And I very much doubt the binmen would give you anything for your parts. I recently tossed an old VCR in the bin, and the b#####ds tried to fine me for "contaminating" the recycling.

Everything I've binned has previously been offered out to others, but you'll find that many don't want to drive more than 10 minutes to collect a part, or don't want to pay for postage these days.
