Rover P6 4.6 V8 Road/Race car.

That would be my plan...drive it for a bit, test the coolant and if I find gases again assume it's a block issue and try the IronTite.

If all seems well I'm off to the rolling road again and get it setup properly.
 
So, the hellicoil of the block. Used the head as a guide (tightened too with a couple of bolts). Couldn't fit a regular drill down there so used the right angle chuck - which was too small for the drill bit so had to machine that down...and then the chuck gear promptly broke. Thankfully a local hardware store had another - happy days.

Had it stationary for a good 20 minutes and came up to temperature nicely, fans brought the temp back down - all as intended. So will see how it goes. Have been giving it some thorough road tests since :D
 
In the past the fuse box has given me hassle - lights would cut out over bumps or corners when you least want them to as well as other weirdness. As many of you know the Series 2 fusebox is not the best quality item. Melty:

A while ago as a roadside repair I cut the wires for the lights and put them to an inline fuses as I got fed up of not knowing if weird electrical things would happen. This week made a more permanent repair - well - at least I replaced half of the fuses - at least that halves the risk of weirdness/annoyance/fire:

I should have ordered more insulated spade terminals really - I don't like them being exposed like that but after I took this picture I did tape up each spade individually and then the 3 way terminals - that'll do. The other half of the fuse box will come another time. I copied the numbering and how some of the terminals are joined to adjacent ones as per the original - gives me something to refer to if it goes wrong.
 
Made it home thankfully. Standard 4 speed. Might not be the box considering it does it regardless of clutch in or out, in gear or in neutral.
 
Is the noise road speed related, or engine speed related? From your video, it only seems to start when you start moving, so that would rule out anything with the flywheel or engine. Any fault on the output side of the gearbox would change with road speed, and wouldn't be effected by gear or clutch. I'd get under the car and have a look at the gearbox output and prop shaft, maybe something's broken up there, or catching on the prop shaft. Is there any vibration when driving the car?
 
Does the noise in neutral, clutch up, clutch down, in any gear or out of gear. But it gets louder when I move and considerably worse in 3rd, and then second worse is 4th.
 
If it makes the noise with the car stationary and with the clutch down, then it must be something in the engine/flywheel or clutch. If you put the car in gear with the engine running and clutch down whist stationary do you still get the noise? This would eliminate anything from the gearbox as all the gearbox internals would be stationary at this point.

Is there an access hole into the bell housing do you could see if anything is amiss on the clutch?
 
I once split a V8 engine and box to find that somebody previously had somehow left a 3/4" drive socket inside the bellhousing. It was wedged from memory but no doubt had been tumbled a fair bit!

Hi, At the beginning of the video while he's waiting for the other car to go past before he does there's no noise, it only starts once he pulls away so that makes it gearbox internals. I think it's a chipped or broken teeth possibly on either the first motion shaft or lay shaft.

Deffo does it with the clutch down. However it does not make the noise if I press the clutch before starting the car...only when I lift the clutch does it make the noise.

Colin: the noise is always there perhaps you just can't hear it on the video. Just a lot worse once you get going.

Tom: I have no idea if there is an inspection hole to be honest. It's back at the garage for them to make an assessment on it just in case it's something obvious. If it's a gearbox rebuild or a new box, I'll take it over to my Mum's house to work on - I resent paying a garage to do that sort of thing. Maybe consider a different box if it's wrecked.

The noise is inside the gearbox. Take it out and dismantle it and the chances are it's been to the dentists.
