Rover P4 front wing splash panel

Hi,
Was there originally any form of seal between the front wing splash panel and the wing? Doesn't seem to be any such parts shown or listed anywhere. Cheers.

I believe not, its a real rust trap with a turned flange and a stud plate . Mine had been plastered with Underseal from new but was still corroded although repairable

Big fan of protective splash shields under mudguards! Porsche use them on the 928 to good effect , as they have equipment fitted under the guards - retracting headlights, fuel system bits etc. On the P6 I plan to make a front wheel well front side template in cardboard and then in ABS to protect the front sidelight housing from road debris. Not sure how to fix one in place yet, but something will come to me.

Are you referring to the front valance under the bumper or between the wing at the rear and the A post area?

IMHO whenever there are areas that are prone to dirt build up that promotes corrosion there should be some protection, especially if there is any equipment in the area. The 928 has a splash shield in front of the front wheels to protect the retracted headlights, at the rear to protect the cruise control vacuum chamber and the A pillar ; at the rear the front shield just covers the rear of the B pillar, the rear shield covers the retracting radio aerial . On the other side rear, the front shield covers some fuel system pipework, and a pressure accumulator. These sort of shields are very common these days, and are a good thing. In a P4 it shouldnt be too hard to find a curved plastic something (rubbish bin?) that might roughly fit the curve of the wheel arch?

You can see the rubber seal on the front edge of my 80 , not sure if its original but the retaining strip and rubber looked like original manufactured parts rather than home made. Struggling to find it in the parts list. but could well be 312168 sealing strip. and 312169 Retainer for seal , but there is no illustration . Closed off the gap down the side . p4 001.jpg

Yes, that's the seal. I bought a seal and retainer hoping that they would fit, but the shape bears more resemblance to the door end of the wing. Anyway, thanks for posting this pic. I am sure I can fabricate something similar to do the job.

Its a few years since I did mine, but the seal is virtually a strip of rubber fitted with the retainer, it then folds over like a flap which conforms to the shape of the wing. I don't think I have a picture of the replacement, which I made myself. This picture you can just see the small holes down the edge where the retainer fixes
