A nice photo!

Am I right in thinking that V8 unit has Zenith (sorry, they're Strombergs!!!) carbs as opposed to SU's?

That looks really interesting , what's it all about ? for demonstrations or some such ? :D

Early development of the Metro 6R4 mule, but they hadn't quite got the chassis right at that point

John.

It will be a Range Rover spec v8. I had them on my stage one. Some SD1 had them but this picture will pre date them.

I like the roof mounted beam.

It looks like the engine rolls on to thr tray then is hoist up or down.

Probably they used them for some sort of staff training on Land Rovers. The V8 seems to be indeed from a Range Rover and the 4 cyl a 2286 diesel. The gearbox with the cutout bellhousing should be from a series vehicle and i can just see a pedal box and various steering parts next to the obvious diffs. It seems that they squeezed everything in the back of this 1 ton IIA and had to be creative with that combination of hoist and trolleys.
Just out of curiosity I tried to look up on DVLA the blue P6 PXC 988J and it says that vehicle details could not be found. Does this means that it was scrapped a long time ago?

I think you'll find that's a Range Rover 4 speed, which ISTR was designated LT85. (But I may have dreamt that bit...)

I 've just googled some photos of LT85 and you are indeed correct.
It makes sense really as it must have been the new stuff back then, that people had to learn about.

Yes it does. I think they only save data on unlicensed cars for a short time and I would imagine that this car was scrapped long before the system was computerised.

What a fascinating picture, thanks a million for sharing...

I wonder if there were many of these vehicles deployed around the country for training purposes?

Cracking and wonderfully evocative

As well as all of the vehicles and equipment in the photo, I'd like the massive Rover badge off the wall as well.

Fantastic photo which I've seen a few times before. One of my friends who's a serial Land Rover owner says that particular Land Rover is still around, and liveried like that, which is fantastic.

Strombergs.

Thanks!

Apparently they were fitted due to their advantage of having integral float chambers, which meant the engine could still run when the car was going up a fearsome incline, or leaning right over to oneside, as Rover obvious expect the RR would do. When SU developed the HIF type carb in about 1973 (??), they were fitted instead. Or so I'd heard....

As far as i know Land Rover products came with Strombergs until 1986.
Then they changed to SUs.
