Rover mag wheels Photo resource

Have been thinking over the last few days that it would be nice to have pictures of all the different variants of wheel that Rover made and posssibly some they didn't that will fit our P6's, I know most of the SD1 mags will fit but I dont know all the variants ythat are out there, could be a good time for a photo record as a resource for all those members wanting to upgrade their standard wheels.

Here is an SD1 wheel

I'm probably wrong, but I think the wheel in your photo is not just an SD1 wheel, but specifically a 14" rim from a Vanden Plas 3500 model. I have a set, polished up. They look nice, not out of place, on a series 2 P6. I don't really like the rubbery Viking badge centre covers all that much though.
Good idea, a wheel photo resource. I'll see what I can collate and post to help this along.
Somebody on here, I forget who, got those Dunlop P6 alloys of fleabay the other week. Lucky man, I've been looking for a set of them for ages, but now I have the SD1 Vanden Plas 14" rims, and a set of 15" SD1 Vitesse 'BBS'-style rims, and I'm saving up for a set of wheels that are really special...

Yes it would be a good idea to also post rim sizes if known, I really like the look of the Vandan plas rims but a larger sized rim such as a 15 inch is a more practicle alternative these days as the range of tyres available to them is greater than for 14 inch rims that preserve the rolling wheel diameter.

Here's a few:
Rostylewheel.jpg

Rostyles. 14 x 5" or 5.5" Optional from about '66? 'til the end of production.
Image095.jpg

Magstars. 14 x 5.5" US market 4 cylinders only from about mid '66 to late '67.
Wires.jpg

Wire wheels. 14 x 5" Option on series 1 TCs only. '66 to '70
WheelsJensen.jpg

Jensen interceptor alloys. 15 x 6"??
FedSTobaccoleaf.jpg

Minilites. 14 x 5.5" Dealer fit option?
FedScoldavosWhite.jpg

Early SD1 alloys. 14 x 6"
wheelsvitesse.jpg

SD1 Vitesse alloys. 15 x 6.5" (or was it 6"?)
NZLoweredv81.jpg

P5B Rostyles. 15 x 5.5"
Wheelswolfracered.jpg

Wolfrace alloys.
Wheelsdunlop.jpg

Dunlop alloys.
Image029.jpg

Cosmic alloys. 14 x 5.5"

Yes but, no but - those Interceptor S3 alloys are georgeous and very light but would need dramatic work on the rear D post area to fit (I know to my cost!). Minilites were indeed a dealer option, but those look more like the later aluminium vesion. SD1 Police spec minilites are also common on P6's.

Plus of course there was:
Denovosonpaprika.jpg

The somewhat rare Denovos. Some odd metric size that worked out to about 14.8 x 6" I think. Optional from about '74 on. Then recalled and replaced under warranty.
Burntgrey2.jpg

I had this set of 14 x 6" Cheviot turbines on this old warhorse many years ago. Some bugger nicked them!
Wheelsjeep16.jpg

Jeep Grand Cherokee alloys. 16 x 7" I think.
Germanv8.jpg

Saw this one on Ebay Germany a few years ago. Don't know anything about them.

The wheels on the burgundy 3500 from German eBay are by Bachtel of Switzerland (says so in big raised capitals on the visible outer rim). They're very nice, and contemporary to the car, in fact I almost bought that exact set of wheels, they're the only set I've ever seen with the P6 bolt pattern. I suspect they were custom-made to order for a well-to-do Swiss Rover enthusiast. My better half sensibly pointed out that as I already have a variety of different alloy wheel sets for the P6 in my garage, but as my car hasn't left said place for many years, collecting more wheel sets would be stupid. I actually didn't like the 'Swiss Made' branding. Now, of course, I rather wish I had bought them, to be honest. Urs at Landypoint in Beuron Neidingen might still have them, I don't know if they were sold with the car.

KiwiRover, you've got the lot, haven't you! Magstars are my favourite, they look brilliant on a P6. Rostyles (the correct ones) can't be beaten, on S1 and S2 just as appropriate, the most attractive steel wheels available and so nice that an 'upgrade' to alloys wouldn't be necessary. Wish I hadn't sold my old S1 V8 on immaculate Rostyles, but that as they say is another story. Just a matter of personal taste, but for me wire wheels simply don't look 'right' on a P6. I think they look awkward and old fashioned, not as modern as the car design itself was back in the day.

That P6 Estate with the Interceptor alloys is Allen Myers old car. He told me those wheels went straight on

I have no knowledge of this car, but the wheels are quite modern. I have never seen them before, does anyone know what they are?

That would be me.. I now have a set of Dunlops alloys and wheel nuts sitting on my deck at home, and hopefully a buyer for my Rostyles.

I used to have a set of SD1 s1.5 alloys on my '67 NZ-new 2000SC. Looked great, although we did have to machine down the earlier front hubs in order to get them to fit, as the earlier hubs are slightly different to the later ones.

Oh, and I have a set of Denovo wheels as well.. my NADA car has them on, as they're great for pushing it around while I'm working on it. Never go flat, even after all this time ;)

Now on my car. Photo is taken off NZ "Trademe" site, which is where I got these. 17" x 7.5's, +35mm offset, 127.0 mm PCD Tyres are 225/50 17"s + sitting on a 3500S in the picture; which is not mine. A Japanese domestic market aftermarket alloy wheel. Supposedly came into NZ on an import, a HiLux 4WD. They have the "JIS" mark, but no manufacturer; the style is old enough these would be long out of production now, so while these may look more modern than the car, in the "bling world" of alloy wheels these are really an "Old School" design.
Forged + reasonably lightweight, although the ring of bolts gives the appearance of a 2-piece wheel, they're not

The car has uprated Ozzie "King Springs" which give a 1.5 inch drop all round and needed a small amount of hammering on the base Unit "D" pillar on one side to effect clearance, now there are no clearance issues and these bolted straight on with no spacers or change of wheel stud diameter or length

Most have commented they don't like the style; but the Wheels look better on the car than the pictures might suggest...

These had a "mirror chrome" finish which has been changed to a silver-grey metallic as the original finish was crazing, less "bling", love 'em!

NZ$800 on my doorstep ( about 390UK pds ) with near-new tyres I thought was very fair buying

I'm impressed! That tyre size gives around 5mm excess diameter versus standard - so well within limits. You definitely have more clearance in your D post area than I do in mine!

Chris, thanks! These were for sale for ages; and I asked the seller a few questions before I bid. ( he was a Septic Tank, nice bloke :D ) His 3500S, which was a pretty decent example + very original, ( UK build, Monza Red ) and had a WOF and registration, sold for NZ$2,500 ( about UK1,200 pds ) less the alloys, a couple of weeks later. Had I not already bought "Gertrude" I would have pounced on this one, it was the best value of a couple of dozen P6's I looked at that were for sale in the North Island round that time. Another NZ$2,500-$3,000 *very carefully spent* dollars + my own labour  , would have made this Rover ready for a concours

As a contrast (+ to show just how dated my alloy wheels are! ) let's Fast-Forward to 2010:

the "Black Ice Nocturno" which has LED illuminated centrecaps as an option....

BlackIceNocturno.jpg

a set of "Diablo Toros" ??
diablotoro.jpg

or  "Driv Devilsides"?

"Zeus Julia Saviors"

Aren't these just begging for an "Austin Powers" Union Jack paint job :?: ....Center cap I'd change to something like a coin with Her Majesty's swede on it

LOL!

Good thread, I cant get past wanting Rostyles, some of the others look nice but Kiwirovers Rostyles mmmmmmmmmm perfect for the p6, dont think anything looks better. Just have to keep looking for some for mine. one day one day I will have some :D

Pity the offset shennanigans on the p6's prevent wheels with a large amount of dish being fitted. I liked dished Minilites or Torq Thrust D's.

Has anyone every weighed some of these wheels? The p5 Rostyle wheels are stupid heavy.

I also didn't know the Magstar wheels were an option! That's awesomesauce.
