Rover 2000TC HS6 SU carburettor overhaul

Hi all,
I have what looks like brown oil dripping from the bottom of my carbs and the car wont tic over without the choke out. I plan on doing a overhaul (basic overhaul kit) and was wondering if it is possible to do it without taking the carbs off the engine. I don't have the privilege of having a workshop with a bench or a dining room with a table, come to think of it a table anywhere in my flat would be a luxury. Car is out on road, so do you think it's possible to do this job on the car without removing the carbs.

Do you own an ironing board could use it as a mobile table.
You would have to take them off really, sounds like you might have a stuck float try tapping the float bowl

Well you should be ok some of the kit you will not need if your not removing the carb
trying to get the jet dead in the middle could be a problem but I wont say its impossible.

Your welcome and your be fine im sure
might want to put a blanket under the carbs just in case anything goes into outer space :p

Same here nightmare when something disappears into the engine never to be seen again, I once remember driving miles opened the bonnet and said oh there’s my spanner I have been looking for that :D

That's a coincidence, I left a full socket set in the box on top of my engine in my Celica and couldn't find it for a week until I opened it to do my weekly checks.

I lost a 2BA spanner when working on my old Land Rover . It disappeared between the engine bay and my bench , 3 ft away . Went over it time after time. Turned up 18 months later sitting on the top of the chassis below the battery tray . It had been on holiday to Norway & back in that time and hadn't been lost.
As suggested a cloth under the carbs so that anything falling will be caught, better without any pattern so parts are visible

That’s a great story Roverp480
after all that time and it was still living happily there just great :)

I bet loads of people take there cars into garages and ask them what the strange knocking noise is I expect they find all kinds ;)

Update on my carburettor refurbish. I had to take them off the car as I couldn't see under the carbs very well when they were in place. I went on You Tube to see if I could find a video for my carbs but drew a blank, as mine doesn't have adjuster nuts below the dash pot where the needle tube is. I couldn't find my carbs in the white Factory workshop manual either. I have a Haynes manual but drew a blank there as well. So I had to wing it and just replaced everything I took out, which wasn't much, basically just the valve in the petrol reservoirs and the needle jet and tube on the carburettor itself. I'm going to replace the bottom heater hose while the carbs are off as I have a new one and access is very good with the carbs off. I will flush the heater while I'm at it.

I would examine the throttle spindles while the carbs are off. Any wear there will really affect running. You can replace just the spindles easily while off, with luck the bushes aren't too worn.

Checked all the linkage and it all moves as it should with no play. Just found out that my car has HS8 carbs not HS6 carbs That's why there is no adjustment at the bottom of the dash pot on the jet tube. Everything I replaced looked the same as the parts I took out so will run as is for a while. If I get a problem I know what it is.

Update. Carbs taken off and taken apart, the only things to change from the overhaul kit was the float shut off valve, there's no adjustment there, so that was simple. then there was the needle valve and tube that it sits in. No adjustment on that either. Put everything back together and back on the car. Set the only two adjuster screws to a position where they were just touching the plates on the linkage so I could adjust the revs when engine running, and then started the engine. It went straight to 2500 rpm, No throttle, no choke. So somethings not right. Have another look tomorrow.
