Rocker cover gasket glue?

I 've never had problems with cork rocker cover gaskets, even when i used to cover 20K miles per year come rain or shine. That said, it was critical how i fitted them first time, but once they settled, they even standed a few removals / refittings of the rocker cover without problems.
I admit though that it is easy to overtighten the rocker cover bolts and squeeze the gasket out of its position.
Same with the rubber version. I did make sure it was attached to the cover with some 3M Spray77 glue. I was able to reuse a few times with that setup.

If you are getting leaks make sure it's the valve cover and not the O-ring in the head gasket leaking down the back of the block. Alternatively, I found it can weep if the breather hoses aren't setup onto the carbs. Just venting the hoses with a filter doesn't help.

A fascinating thread. I had my rubber gasket fail (right by the thermostat housing with the now familiar sounding spray of oil over the carb area) which had been fitted with a black sealant of some sort which had turned to loose little wafer thin strips. We used some very fine grinding paste to both the head and cover before fitting the new gasket dry as per Wins' instructions. We did find a couple of small dings in the head which had raised some of the head material enough to make gasket sealing awkward. These are now carefully filed down. Breather soaked in petrol to clean it out. Now waiting for a proper road test to see what happens next.....
