Rock hard clutch - loss of clutch action

Hi all,

I've had a few days' trouble-free motoring, but now the clutch has completely gone.

I have done around 100 miles in the last few days, & part way through a journey this morning, the clutch went from 'normal' to impossible to press / change gear, completely without warning.

The master cylinder has been weeping slightly for a while, but the reservoir seems OK & it had't stated to get worse over time or anything. I had to turn round for home (ie: push the car back into a field gateway & start it in 3rd gear & get home without stopping or changing gear). Fortunately it was very early in the morning & there wasn't much traffic to dodge!

Please help.....

The pedal is rock hard with no movement ? Could be the clutch diaphragm has collapsed and the slave cylinder has moved out to the end of the bore. I think a look underneath is callled for

Thanks, Dave,

I did have a look underneath last night - where had the clutch operating lever gone?

Pedal therefore pushed as far as would go. I will definitely need new seals now!

It must have worked loose along the splines (with the bolt having come out) & dropped off after I'd last changed gear. It would have taken some time to work its way off.

Never heard of that happening before!

This wasnt the problem here, but I have had this twice (on brake and clutch and not both my poor spanner work) - the circlip which holds the rod from pedal to master cylinder can fail to seat properly (especially, no always, if you reuse the old one) and the rod fall out and then jam outside the master, giving no clutch/brake action at all. And a rock hard pedal!
