Revitalised Wiper Delay

Phil, you are a hard man.
Taking piccies of that quality and detail whilst on the job, having the nerve to load it all up and comment it here takes some efford - DANKE SEHR :!:

As I have gone through this some weeks ago (...) and with the park switch (that was lazy before) now working brillantly and the delay (that was not AS lazy) now working only half-time, I will have to look at it again - and your post makes me looking forward to that - eypecially the wiring diagram :D

(PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAASE do one of these on choke cables  8) !!!!!!!!!!
Mine SOMETIMES works allright, and the next month it looses its light action, has me pull the radio console out of its place and dose the choke with the sheer strenght of my arm... .
And what makes it worse: my dad - you know, the type of guy that can fix ANYTHING - cannot figure out WHERE in the spare (used) cable the locking mechanism lives... )

Danke!

stefan

I just thought I might add ,when you put the wiper wheel boxes back on ,make sure you put them on the right way up

What gives you that idea ? It did have me scratching my head for a while

Excellent guide thank you I decided to start mine but is there a different procedure for the Series two 2000 sc as my wiper linkage is fouling the heater box and wont just slide out

Agree a Brilliant post, job waiting for you at Haynes. Did you do anything with the delay governor, seem to remember reading a post that said there was a bit of sponge inside that should be replaced??

I did open the delay governor unit to clean it, but the foam/sponge inside seemed OK. From the pictures I have of the job, I can tell that I definitely removed the foam, but it was refitted in a later picture, after the governor was reassembled. I can't believe that I did the job over four years ago! Where did that time go?

Codekiddie in particular! ...i've recently taken my wiper motor apart to fit a new park switch..i've forgotten which position the drive/worm wheel was in..is there a particular position it should be in at rest! Cheers, Pete.

If your talking about the large main drive wheel which operates the parking switch, then I don't think it really matters. When you first apply power to the motor it will run until it gets to the parked position, and then stop (unless you manage to get it in the parked position to start with). I am willing to be corrected by others who may know better though :)

I agree the cam operating the park switch is on the wheel so it will always stop in the same place after being powered up.

Many Thanks Phil,
A bit late, but I am about to embark on the same task on Pea Soup. Your photo series and the wiring illustrations, along with the text are most helpful to a first-time overhauler. I notice that your wiper motor compartment is minus air conditioning hoses, which may well make my task a bit more difficult.
I think I will get hold of a spare wiper setup and work on it on my work bench first, and then overhaul the original. With delay switched on, the wiper arms move to the middle of their sweep and stop - that is it, permanent delay! Also they do not self-park.
Thanks again,
Mike Allfrey (Pea Soup).

Hi Mike.

It sounds like the only problem you have is with the self parking switch. On slow and fast settings the self parking switch is unused but during delay, as soon as BOTH the self parking switch and the delay governor have changed state, you are relying on the self parking switch to supply power. If it does not then your wipers will stop midway on intermittent wipe, and also the self parking function will fail, both of which you say are happening.

The wiper connections are highlighted above, during parking after switching off the wipers. The 12V power comes in on pin 4, through the parking switch and exits on pin 2. The other end of the pin 2 connection goes to pin 6 of the wiper switch on the dashboard, exiting on pin 4, then on to pin 5 on the wiper connections to the slow speed wipers. The image below shows the connection numbers of the wiper connector.

ps_connections.jpg

First you need to check for 12V power on pin 4 of the wiper connections, and again on pin 2 when the wipers are in operation. On pin 2 there should initially be no voltage until you switch on the wipers, then as they move off the voltage should appear. For you this would be easiest to do in delay mode. If the voltage is missing then the fault is with the parking switch as I suspect.

If the voltage is present on pin 2, then check pin 5. If there is no voltage on pin 5 then the wiper switch on the dashboard, or the wires on pins 4 and 6 of the wiper switch, needs attention. Check the image below for the wiper switch connections.

All the information above is for my 3500S, but hopefully it will give you an idea of what to look for.

Hi. I have a query for you. I've just overhauled my wipers and found this information very useful. My problem is that my wipers now run in reverse. The marks line up on the casing. I've tried turning the casing round, still the same, whichever way round. They run fine and park ok, just the wrong way round. Any ideas as to what I might have done wrong? I'm getting cross with it now, I've done the heater and the cam and lifters but this has got me baffled.
Cheers
John

Codekitty, this is fantastic. I am no way a do it yourself type but your detailed post with pictures enabled me to tackle this.

I have done this step by step and the wipers are still not working though.

I think my problem is that the gear crank-pin and the connecting rod (the long one that drives the actual wipers) are not connected. The crank-pin pushes the connecting rod but I can't see how it then pills it back.

What am I missing?

If I understand you correctly, the square end of the flexible rack has a hole in it and the crank arm has a pin which fits in the hole so that it will push and pull the rack backwards and forwards. If the square end of the rack is slotted into the motor 90 degree out, one cannot see the hole.

OK, I've attached a picture. I don't see how the winder mechanism "pulls" back the spiral rod that operates the winders. I can see how it pushes it but not how it pulls it back.

I am sorry to have to tell you this but your cable has broken, the two parts should be joined.
