Revitalised Wiper Delay

Isn't it great having people like Quattro on this webpage?
So many wise sages to draw on !!
Makes me want to pull my wiper mechanism apart to see why it still runs after fifty years of service.
I bet the grease in mine will be hard as rock.

LOL, I just happened to have had the same problem, and take loads of pictures because my memory is so bad.

:)

And I bet that can't be done without taking it out of the car...

Hi ComputerMan - did you manage to sort out your wiper parking issue (when in Delay mode) - I have the exact issue (and hence my interest in a solid state switching unit).

I echo the comments about Quattro and Codekiddie, your time and photos used for guidance are much appreciated.

I have not yet checked my connector block for any signs of the mounting being loose leading to potential blade contact issues

I'm interested in your results, thanks

brilliant info - just read the whole lot! I have never had the delay working. Initially I discovered the vacuum pipe end from the delay unit was just hanging in air- the plastic connection sprout was snapped off - I am told common enough. I was going through eBay river stuff one evening and found a unit complete for I think £20 so snapped it up. I fitted it in 2022 during engine bay refurb and engine rebuild - it still does not work but as it works continuously in the delay switch mode and parks ok in low and fast speed I recon it could be the foam issue. I will open it up and see. Of course pipe integrity is unknown as is white knob. But I am closer to fixing it than I was. A clever set up for its day for sure!

The foam consistency is important in this area. I found it useful to put a smear of vaseline on the sealing area to help it .

I also loved the detailed info on the delay relay fitment - and that some had this fitted back in the 70s. The relay in question I looked up on ebay and one did come up - in Germany. about 18 euro but near 30e post (customs costs). It appears this relay was fitted as standard to E21 series 3 BMWs - from what i could tell anyway. The pictures of it wired in on the bench really helpful - It was a surprise to see it simply using existing connections that are used on the vacuum delay unit - makes sense now of course. So relay must have sat/sit where wiper motor delay unit currently does. I will have a go at fixing my unit but if it appears more trouble re pipe integrity lost, then Plan B is fit this relay!
