Revcounter fluctuates - all over the shop

Hi guys, new to the forum as I've just got my first P6, a '71 V8. Got a few probs that I'm trying to sort out in time to take it down to Goodwood on our first roadtrip together, one of which is the revcounter. When I first drove the car the rev counter was fluctuating wildly whenever the box kicked down or throttle depressed. Now, when I start the engine, it jumps straight up to 4500 at idle (the engine's prob doing about 1000 rpm), this makes the needle plough into the red when driving. Anyone got any ideas?

This could possibly be to do with the voltage regulator for the dash, it gives a steady (10v I believe) for the instruments, and I've found that varying this voltage varies the response of the rev counter. Now it may be a faulty unit, or may be a poor connection.

Found it! I'd been reading a few posts and come across details of the pick up for the rev counter being off the coil. Whilst replacing the rocker cover gaskets (that had all the sealing capacity of a wet teabag) I had a quick look at the coil. Lo and behold, the black wire had been wearing on something and had burnt most of the wire sheath. A quick repair and relocation and now she works again! Thanks for the feedback though and I look forward to requesting more info as someone bought up in the metric era tries to get to grips with wonderful new spanner and socket sizes.... :)
