Check the pins on the back of the tacho. IIRC one is a spade, other is a bullet - disconnect both and apply some Deoxit. Also do the connectors on the coil.
Deoxit is stuff that promotes conductivity where needed, see link. Not cheap, but I have had my pen for > 10 years. Apply it whenever I disconnect fuses, blade connectors etc. Also use on ground fittings.
DeoxIT ® dissolves the contamination and protects the surface. Formulation: 100% DeoxIT ®. No flushing action. Notes: Use when over spray is an issue on materials. Formulation safe on plastics. Wipe off and re-apply DeoxIT ®.
One other thing to check is that the needle isn't making contact with the dial around the spindle part, that's the issue I had with mine, some careful adjustment of the screws and dial fixed it.
