Rev counter

Hello i have a 1975 3500 running on traditional points set up. Itt's had the rev counter replaced but still doesn't work.
I'm used to having a positive to power it ,the body to earth and 2 wires to loop with the coil.
However coming from the dash there are only 2 wires.
A positive to power it and one from the coil.
Did they changed them later on to not have a loop from the coil? As the replaced counter in the dash has the traditional set up ie needing 3 wires.
Many thanks.

I think the revcounter with the two wires is a RVC revcounter. It needs a positive ( white) lead and the negative of the coil. But as Peter mentioned look at your meter it reveals what it is in the small writing at the bottom of the dial.

Ok thanks, I'll have a look when I get a chance. As said I only have 2 wires coming from the dash. One is a constant live the other wires voltage picks up on the multimeter as I rev the engine.
I assume there's no way to "doctor" the rev counter with the 3 inputs?
