rev counter

can anyone tell me what does the rev counter run off to measure the rpm.the clock worked prior to rebuild it has power but does not register.

-ve side(switch/points sw) of the coil is where the instrument picks up the pulse signal - make sure the wire has not been put on the +ve terminal ... the car I got recently had that as a problem. Otherwise all it needs is an earth and 12 volts.
